Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() very nice job on the race and can't wait to see the race report. Running my first open half marathon tomorrow morning, not wildly well trained for it (the past 4 weeks have been either off or pretty light save the last 8 days), but should be fun and a good intro to the distance. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had a pretty solid run this morning and had a good time. Weather looked great at 50 degrees, and i ran in a tank and arm warmers which ended up perfect. a bit cold through mile 2, and pretty comfortable from there on out. Ran very even splits with the slight uphill miles around 6:30 pace and the light downhill ones at 6:25. hit mile 5 at 32:xx, and mile 10 at 1:04:xx Finish time was 1:24:40 really not much left to pick it up the last mile or two, but i'm happy with how things went considering recent training and current weight. Excited to see where this goes with a nice block of running this winter, and all in all a fun first half. |

![]() Great job jackie. Can't wait to read the RR. David...you're a freak. Your first HM on little training and you go sub 1:25. You're disgusting...=P I had a pretty good long run this morning. Did 18 miles. The first few miles were rough...my legs were just a bit stiff...but slowly they started to feel much better. Pace 10:16 on the 9 miles going out...and 9:37 on the 9 miles coming back. Overall...it was right were I wanted to be...around 10 mm. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() remember that whole more free time thing;-) Nice job on the long run and negative splitting it was even better! |
![]() ![]() |
![]() I don't think it was so much as negative splitting as it was getting warmed up. My legs just felt like crap the first 4 miles or so...and I'm pretty sure I was running 11+ minute miles...granted there was a decent climb in there. Once on the descent, my legs finally opened up. I suppose it's just all the miles in my legs building up the past 2 months. I don't feel nearly as fresh during the beginning of my runs recently...but I suppose that's the idea with marathon training. To be training on tired legs...just not so tired that you can't complete your runs. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() i noticed that a lot last winter/early spring, the higher the mileage went (actually in all three sports) the longer the warm up needed to be before that ready to go feeling was there. it would routinely in the higher mileage weeks take 4-5 miles running, 45-60min on the bike, or 800 in the pool before everything felt loose and ready to go. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Race results are posted for my tri on the website. I didn' do as bad as I thought for the 10K run (1 hr 15 mins) especially with all the walking breaks I had to take in the middle. And my swim (32 mins) and transitions were not bad either. I'm just painfully slow on the bike. So, my plan is to concentrate on running until my HM in Dec and then focus on the cycling going into 2011. Def a little frustrating to see that I'm beating people on the swim, transition and run, only to have them kill me on the bike. I'll post a RR later tonight. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nice job Jackie!!!! You had a great time and you did great as far as I'm concerned. You can totally build from there and I know you'll smash those numbers next year. With your dedication, no doubt in my mind. So I did my FTP test. I'm not sure how you are supposed to feel after it, but something tells me I could have pushed a bit harder. I know you are supposed to start strong and build, but I may have been a bit conservative at the beginning. I ended up with an average of 241, so my FTP is 228 I suppose. Honestly, I was expecting more like 250, but if you've never trained with power before, how the heck can you really expect anything anyway. |

Doctor tells me I have at least another two weeks until I can run again. Frustrating, but necessary I guess. |

I think you beat my swim time in my Oly. I was just under 33 minutes. Your running is getting strong, and you have nowhere to go but up on the bike. Next year should be really exciting for you. |

Honestly, I was expecting more like 250, but if you've never trained with power before, how the heck can you really expect anything anyway. I've still only done one 20 minute test since I got my PT. I swear I thought I was going to puke my guts out and I almost fell off my trainer when I finished. It's probably why I haven't done one since. But a few weeks after my marathon..."I plan" to test again. I tested at 248 (235 estimated FTP). BTW...FTP stands for "fuctional" threshold power. I may have tested at 235...but if you were watching me on the trainer...I don't know how "functional" my form was...my head was completely down the last 10 minutes and my eyes were mostly closed. I couldn't have done that test on the open road. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() one of the first rules of almost all athletic testing, throw out the results of test one rather quickly. if you tested again next week they would likely be higher just due to knowing where to start/how to pace. try again in two weeks and see how the numbers stack up |

![]() David...how did you warm up for your HM. My HM coming up is the first running race that I'm actually planning to race hard off the gun. So previously...I just stretched and used the first 1-2 miles to get loose. I've never toed the line with any prespiration on me...ever. But I figure for a well raced HM, you need a sufficient warm up. I can't expect to go from standing still to 8:30 miles in an instant. I was thinking about doing something like this. 10-15 minutes stretching 10 minutes very light jogging just to get warm 5-10 more minutes stretching Then maybe 4x 2 minutes running/15 second bursts/45 seconds walking I just made that up off the top of my head...how far off am I...LOL |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have been keeping up with all thats going on here but haven't had anytime to post. Right now I really don't have much time but I am posting out of frustration. I am in my race week preparation and eating well and all but work may throw some wretched storms at me today. The weather people are saying it's going to be nasty which could mean some all night work that will make my race much harder if I have to pull an all nighter. After all the work I have done I get to have this type of complication thrown at me this late. There is even a rare and unlikely possibility that my boss may try to keep me from taking off for the race. If he does, this everyone on the easy coast will a thunderous battle between he and I. I don't think this will happen but if it did........it will not be pretty! |

You gotta do that race again next year to see how much you improve. I know exactly what you mean about getting killed on the bike. Focusing on the run until Dec and then moving onto the bike focus (while at least maintaining the run) sounds like a plan. |

Doing so on cold muscles is a very easy way to hurt something. I ran down to the race so approx 1.5 miles total of warm up, most of it pretty easy. after i got signed up, i also did 5x100m strides (accelerate up to race pace and then back down). normally before races i like to get in a mile or so about 30 min out, just to get loose and moving around, then i'll go do like 2xhalf mile in the 15 min before, with a bit of that at/just over race pace. for 5ks that goes up to 3 or so miles total, |

![]() David, So you don't stretch at all before a race/workout? I've always stretched pre workout...and sometimes as soon as I get up in the morning and instantly feel much better. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dirk- Sorry to hear about the work situation. Hopefully everything turns out ok. Here is my RR http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=231855 |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The storm turned out to be less of an event than was being predicted but we did have around 20 poles broken and several other lines that had more minor damages on them. I was able to get to bed last night at around 10:30, a little later than I would have liked but definitely manageable. Most of the storm work is being covered already and by tonight we should have everything cleaned up. All that to say, I worried more than I needed to. But with what they were predicting, it sounded really ugly. I would say I am on track for this weekend. |

I've always stretched pre workout...and sometimes as soon as I get up in the morning and instantly feel much better. never before. sometiems after, but most of the time not. but strertch on cold muscles is a very good way to hurt them regardless of what you think about stretching or not. |
![]() ![]() |
![]() Don't take this the wrong way...but do you think that stretching in general is bad? |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Nope, i dont think its bad, and i think for some sports it makes more sense than for others. From what i have read/seen/experienced etc, Doing so before warming up can tear/pull muscles that are not loose (i've seen people do this in hockey, running, rowing). stretching before may/may not help, i've seen no proof that it does, and since i've taken it out before workouts its been a non-issue (meaning i've seen nothing change, both in my own and coaching tris/rowing). afterward, i think it *can* help, but again i'm not 100% convinced it does for this sport. I've had periods of my life where i have, and have not stretched. NO dif. That said, i think a few things are worth noting here. stretching does help more in activites where you see a full range of motion vs teh fairly limited ones of running/cycling (ie anything that involves a lot of joint rotation such of throwing), contact sports (hockey, football, soccer) where you have massive impacts that twist your body etc. Also as you get older, i think it can help retain flexability. I do have my kids stretch after some workouts (probably 3 out of 6 practices a week). I'm not sure its helping, but it can't hurt. We never do before. In my own training, like i said i've cut it out before, and so far in 4 years nothing resulting from that in a good/bad way. stretching on cold muscles however is not going to accomplish what you are looking for (ie you want things to actually stretch out). they will loosen up more than that simply from warming up (and then stretching if need be). |
![]() ![]() |
![]() Ok...that makes sense. I would agree that a slow jog or a nice 10 minute spin does work better than stretching. |
