Jo63 - 2013-04-05 6:20 AM Thanks for posting the bike pics along with the info on pedaling! Tracy: I hope things are settling down at your house Tony: take a really hard look at your nutrition. I started eatting better a couple months ago but wasn't completely committed, a couple weeks ago when I had that workout meltdown it was my wake up call to commit, since then I have been really good about what I eat and the reward is I feel awesome, I get tired but not the exhausted fatigued feeling I had. No more missed workouts because I am just too tired Sam: what did you decide for your race? I wish it would warm up here I need to get out and test how my progress on the bike is coming and I hate the cold, I need it to be 70 before I will go outside and ride. Overall I feel like my training is the strongest it has ever been, although compared to the rest of you that's not a lot I am still really slow, my son was talking to some new people he works with and running came up and he told them I do triathalons and that I had attempted an Ironman....conversation continued and one of the guys stopped and said wait how old is your mom? When he told them I would be 50 this year he said wow that awesome at her age...lol at MY AGE hahaha what is that supposed to mean? On a side note I have to tell you the new energy at the salon is awesome, like I said it is unbelievable what one persons attitude can do for a whole group.

Jo- Congrats and I am glad to hear that the salon environment is awesome.

As for the comment.... I am 34 and I had a 27-yr-old gal (runner) tell me a few weeks ago that I looked great for my age and for having had two kids..... uummmm... okay... I hope someone tells her the same thing pretty soon, once she tells them that she has one child. BTW- At least Saturday's tri, I got passed on the bike by an 85-yr old man.... that put things in perspective for me.

Jo, congrats on all accounts.

Tony, we can start harassing you about your diet...lol  Just kidding

Karl you guys probably should be the way I have been eating lately. You'd think I know better by now.

Jen I had to laugh about you being passed by the 85 yr old guy but don't feel bad about it I've gotten passed by men and women older than I am plenty in the running events and triathlons I've done. I'm always impressed by people who do that and yes it does sort of put things in perspective. Besides you had a mechnical issue with your bike.

dmiller5 - 2013-04-05 8:15 AM Hey everyone, sorry I've been MIA lately, have had the prolonged-winter blues and just haven't really had the motivation to get in the training I want. Hopefully with the promise of warmer weather ahead I can get back into things. I hope everyone is doing well!

Hi David!

The winter blues suck.  I was talking with a co-worker yesterday about how his Dr. has recently begun testing for Vitamin-D deficiency as part of every single blood panel he does.  They are finding that Vit-D deficiency is becoming super common with all of the emphasis on avoiding sun exposure these days.  It's always a consideration over the winter, but now it's a year-round issue.

If you don't drink a lot of fortified milk you have no other source for it.

And one of the symptoms on the short-list is depression and lethargy.  Sometimes it's just the blues from winter...but ask to have it checked soon, or just go ahead and start taking a supplement in case.

How do you interpret this data?

Jeff it seems like I will be stating the obvious here but looks like the glutes are mainly used for the downstroke and it's seems like that is where you generate the most force where as the hamstrings and hip flexors are mainly used on the upstroke. Now what this actually means I'm not so sure but I'm very interested in getting your take on this.

MORE swim ???'s

Yesterday in the pool, I swam 100 yards and was exhausted, stopped for about 20 - 30 seconds and went again and swam another 100, did it again and FINALLY started feeling good, at that point I swam I think 1,000 non-stop, then a guy stopped me so he could share a lane and i swam a few hundred more and got out...well except for touching the pool and starting over, just relaxed and not fast.  I swam 45 minutes almost nonstop

My wetsuit makes me float and gives me confidence that I won't drown but dang it wears my shoulders out.  How much harder is it to swim in a sleeved wetsuit vs a sleeveless?  OR is it the openwater that I'm tensing up and panicking and wearing myself out?

I know ya'll can't answer this, just thinking outloud....

With sleeves can definitely wear on the shoulders... so make sure you've got the right size & pull that joker up high.  Or just get a sleeveless (that's what I'm thinking about if I go for the full IM)

Tony - I'm with you on the need for a better diet.  My nutrition knowledge is about zero... really to the point that I cant even have a basic convo or understand much that I read... talking in generalities and about ingredients doesnt help me much... I need someone to give me a list of specific foods to eat...

If you guys want the best of both worlds get a DeSoto wetsuit. I got a new one this for this season, it's a two piece wetsuit. I got the top and the bibjohn bottoms so I can use it as a full sleeved wetsuit with the top or just wear the bibjohn and it'll be like a sleeveless wetsuit.

I had to replace my DeSoto from last year because it was too big. I lost so much weight it didn't fit but I loved swimming with it. It's very easy to get on and off and it gives you full range of motion around the shoulders. It's less restrictive in my opinion. I didn't have the bibjohn bottoms though I had the pant bottoms. I can't wait to get out and give it a test run in the open water.

Dirk, first 10 day forecast is out for Boston: looks like pretty good running weather.  It's still 10 days out so this forecast could change, but looks like probably mid 50s and a perfect wind:

Sun Apr 14

58°/44°

Sunny Chance of rain: 0%

Mon Apr 15

59°/44°

Partly Cloudy  Chance of rain: 10%

Wind:  SSW at 12 mph

Tracy feel better, and no that hasn't happened to me on FB

As for me another week of no missed workouts this is sooo different from last year! And I finally lost some weight, i may have said this already.....I was told because I had not been eatting enough calories for so long my body actually thought I was starving myself so it was hanging on to everything i ate and that it would take a while of proper calorie intake before I would lose anything go figure, add more food, loose weight!!!

Yeah, the first thing I did yesterday morning when I got out of bed was to check the forecast.  I have been watching it everyday all week.  Now it just has to hold that forecast for the whole weekend but most importantly race day!

A little bit of an update for me:  Yesterday I was getting our house ready for our new flooring to be installed moving some furniture around and packing some things up to get out of the way and tweaked my back.  I strained a muscle or something and now it is spasm-ing.  Yesterday was kind of painful if I moved the wrong way but so far this morning it's more calmed down.  I am using heat to keep it more lose and hopefully all will be fine.

I have more work to do to get ready for the new flooring and I want to get more running in today and all week.  I had a 3 mile run planned for yesterday and a 1:30:00 ride planned.  Both obviously got ditched to allow my back to calm down but I am planning a run this morning.  I actually think a run will get my back more loosened up.  When I run today I'll take my phone with me in the case I would need to call for a pick up.  Besides, I'll be running close to home if I need to ditch the run.

BTW, Our new flooring doesn't get installed until we get back from Boston but I figure I won't be in the best shape to be moving much when we get home.

Lastly,  I saw my brother for much of the day yesterday.  He and his wife were in town, as I mentioned in an earlier post, to get the remaining few things packed up at their old home here in town.  Once that was complete they spent some time at our moms house in Ohio and came back up here to spend time with her family.  Yesterday was his last day in Ft. Wayne before heading back to Wyoming and I wanted to spend as much time with him as possible.  We had a great time together!  As we parted for the evening I told him I would like to spend some time out in Cody with him.  He and I made the trip out together and it was one of the most memorable times  have had with him.  He concurred!  Hopefully I'll get out there next year and do some cycling and running in more of the real mountain ranges that would dwarf Jonathan's speed bumps that he's used to hiking through.

I'm putting a picture here for you to consider.  The arrows indicate the desired direction of force on the crank at each position in the rotation.  This is what we are taught to do, to pedal in circles.

How do you interpret this data?

One question about this post:  I suspect this graphic is correct if you have a good fit?  Otherwise you may be applying other muscle groups in the wrong areas, at the wrong time.  I am not attuned to the specific details as Jeff, but throughout all of our discussion about cycling we've learned the importance of a proper fit to get all of the right muscles engaged properly.

I hope to get a Retul fit in the next 6-8 months but I seem to feel alright when riding my TT bike.  I do know I could use some adjustments on my roadie.  I may post a coupe of pics when I have the chance but one thing I am completely aware of is my seat position is to far forward.  I have never made the adjustment back to a road position after taking the clip on aero's off when I got my TT bike.  I need to find my old stem to make the adjustments back to a road position.  Currently I have a Profile Design Fast Forward seat post that threw me into a more tri specific geometrical position.

I think total was around 190, I finished 13th overall and 2nd in my AG. Good times! There is another race this coming weekend that is completely flat, I'm half tempted to run it to see what happens.

Dirk I hope your feeling better and we better not hear about you moving anything around or doing anymore heavy lifting until after Boston.

It's also funny that you brought that up because I had the same thing happen to me yesterday. After my 10 mile run which was great btw my lower back/lower rib cage on my right side was killing me. Any movement or twisting to the left or the right was quite painful. Sleeping was a challenge last night as I could not roll over to my right side. I have no idea what I did to strain or tweak it but thankfully it is not feeling that bad this morning. I am still planning to get my 3 hour bike workout in on the trainer today.

One more thing about Boston, for those of us who are not going to be fortunate to actually be there you can watch the marathon on USN (universal sports network) if you have that channel. They will be televising it starting at 9 am EST. Dirk just make sure you are running up front with the leaders so we can get to see you, no pressure.
