Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Oh my, WILL - that's a bit scary! With a name like Mary Lee she sounds harmless.....yeah, right. So I see BT has a membership sale going on. I've never looked at it or thought about it but I'm a woman who likes a sale so I gotta ask you that have a membership - is it worth it? Do you use it?

NH | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by mambos On my front I am progressing well in my running, holding around 30 mpw but also getting in some intensity runs to work on the oxygen depletion! This past weekend I ran 2 5k's, the 1st one on Saturday was a little short and I ran a 21:20 and won! Of course the weather was nasty so no one showed up! Sunday I ran another at the exact same time of 21:20 and this course was accurate! Missed a PR by 3s but finished strong with my 3rd mile being faster than the 2nd mile! Then right after the race I ran another 3 miles at 8:45 pace, legs were stiff but not bad Overall goal is to get under 1:40 in my HM in November and hopefully find a 5k in December so I can go under 21! Then my 2013 goals will be met! at some point in all of this though I need to get back to tri training! Awesome racing. 1:40 is pretty aggressive, but a great target. |

NH | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Will, step away from the ledge! You've got this. In terms of execution strategy, study Tony's race. Swim should be easy, easy, easy. Never go faster than you can maintain great form. Bike, start out easy, and back off from there! Seriously though, you should start off very easy. B2B is flat but windy, so stay aero as much as you can and just plug along without ever feeling that you're pushing. Move around as required to prevent cramping in the back/neck etc, since you won't have hills to break up the position. For the run, start slow and back off from there! Again, seriously, take it VERY easy at first. Almost everyone goes way too fast off the bike for the first few miles. Try to go very easy, until even going easy gets hard. Whether we agree with their training approach or not, Endurance Nation has the execution strategy nailed down for IM, I suggest a quick visit to their site for IM strategy, or Tony or I can point you to the specifics. Essentially their strategy is to prepare everything for the line at 18 miles on the marathon, or wherever your line hits (but that's a common place). Don't do anything before that line without asking if what you're considering will help or hurt you at that line. |

And x2 on the EN strategy for doing an IM. Their advice for racing IMWI was spot on. Do the opposite of what everyone else is doing! If you get passed by an old man with a bucket of chicken on the front of his bike you are doing the right thing lol. Seriously everything you've said here is true. It all sounds so simple but if you can execute it you'll have a great race. Patience is the key! |

I am considering upgrading to either silver or gold. Will I had no desire to swim with any shark much less a great white that is partly why I chose Wisconsin and the lake swim. |

Master 3486 Fort Wayne | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Wow! There was a lot of activity yesterday. Thanks Dina for the "I told you so." It is somewhat of a good feeling to know that the forced time off should help a couple of other things mend and maybe get me back to work in a much more healthy state. Matt, Those as killer 5k times!! Congrats on ridiculous speed and that great podium spot! Will, As I perused your list I missed some leg warmers (calf sleeves may suffice). Do you have some? They might be a good idea to have for the bike to make sure you don't begin to chill. Swimming with sharks sounds like a great fun............for someone else! I am somewhat anxious for your race to get going. I will probably become the town grouch as my IM approaches! I'll have to re-read the post about taper blues multiple times a day on race week. |

Expert 1439 Tallahassee | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Will, sharks only attack blood and the weak (those floundering around) lol. I was also told not to wear any jewelry, including wedding rings because anything flashy draws attention to things like bluefish and barracuda's, then if they bite your finger, you start bleeding, then you are shark bait...lol Just playing with you, really I would not wear any jewelry, or anything flashy. Yea I'm not so sure i can handle tapering, I'mm trying to taper right now and it is driving me CRAZIER than I already am. Now, I never done a long distance either so we'll have to wait and see. Now get out there, enjoy the experience and kick some butt! |

Now I'll have to waste many hours of my day trying to figure out what I can do with this membership . I've hit that bad place with my running, my feet hurt again. It's really frustrating that I struggle trying to do so little, feeling very discouraged. I have not run for 3 days but I will get back on the wagon today. Matt more congratulations from me!

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Dina good for you, glad to hear you were able to get a run in today. I can't say I blame you about being fustrated. You've had to continually battle these types of issues. I think I'd be fustrated as well. Hopefully things will continue to get better for you so you can run pain free consistently. Pretty cool seeing the wildlife as well. I see deer often when running in my neighborhood. On the MTN bike ride this past weekend we got to see a pretty big deer darting across the trail and up a hill, it was moving pretty fast. We were surprised to see it out there during the day like that. |

I took a look at your log from the week and developed a question. I noticed that you have not been spending quite as much time on the bike the past 2 weeks. Do you have any suspicions that a reduction in cycling can be linked to any of your foot issues? Can you recall, or possilbly look back in your logs, to determine if there is so correlation with reduced cycling and your foot issues? |

Do you have any suspicions that a reduction in cycling can be linked to any of your foot issues? Can you recall, or possilbly look back in your logs, to determine if there is so correlation with reduced cycling and your foot issues? Dirk thanks for checking on me. I "think" I have figured out that it is from the shoes I was wearing around the house then when I run it aggravates the issue. I've switched shoes the last few days and I ran 5 yesterday. I expected my foot to feel pretty bad when I got up this morning but it doesn't! Hooray! I also did my therapy foot exercises and applied biofreeze before I went to bed last night though so it all may have helped. Yes I have not been on the bike as much. The increased swimming intervals and distance plus trying to stay consistent running is kind of taking a mental drain on me honestly so I've purposefully given myself permission to let the cycling slide for now. I just downloaded the BT Winter Maintenance plan to my training log to help me get a little more focus though. And I truly NEED to add some strength training & core work. I did 5 push ups with the homeschool group I have been teaching at the Y this month and yesterday I could not figure out why in the heck my shoulders were so sore - then I remembered the push ups. I just read a blog last night from a pro triathlete and she was discussing letting it go for a while. That athletes are Type A and have a hard time in the off season letting some fitness slide or gaining a few pounds and think it is the end of the world. I kind of relate to that and think I need to switch things up some in November. But the flip side is my personal training is not as focused as that of a coached athlete or someone with a specific race goal. I kind of just make things up as I go as you all know and jump in a race if I can so maybe that does not apply to me. I don't feel like I gained all that much fitness during the season ha ha ha!!! Happy Thursday everyone - pool day for me and I'm scared to go look at todays workout! |

Happy Thursday everyone - pool day for me and I'm scared to go look at todays workout! That is a good point by that pro triathlete. I don't consider myself a Type A person at all but I can relate to the fitness slide and weight gain which I am very fearful of. I've been doing just enough to keep my weight in check but I've been wondering if maybe it's too much lately? I've never had a year where I've put so many hours of training. I've been sleeping at least 8 hours a night and I'm still tired. Outside of the weekends I've been just trying to get an hour a day in whether it is a swim, bike or run, very unregimented and unstructured. I'm thinking maybe I need to back off and actually take a day off each week and not worry about my weight and fitness so much. It's just a very hard thing for me to do lol. |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED I see the little "Silver Member" by your avatar, DINA! I've not yet taken the plunge but since that one says it's the "best value" I'd join that one, too. Sorry about the continued frustration with your running. It makes sense that the shoes you wear around and about all day impact how your feet feel. I know that when I go from my summer sandals to my winter sneakers my feet always hurt a while. Hope that's the solution. Enjoy pool time today! I've been a bit under the weather which generally happens with the change of seasons. It's good to read us A-type personalities need to let it go and that I'm in good company. Have a Terrific Thursday everyone!

Just back off a little if you feel the need, or try to get out for some hard walking. This is a marathon, not a sprint! A little core and strength training goes a long way. I'm also going to add some strength work to my routine on a more permanent basis - not so much to improve triathlon but to improve my quality of life as I have gotten older and I'm noticing my strength is really dropping fast. Get well soon. I got through a similar process as school starts and my kids bring their school germs hone, particularly Jeremiah, who lives life through his tongue so he shares everything with us! (I know, TMI). How is everyone at this end of season rest time? I'm actually great about it. I take October totally off S/B/R and just do some things when I feel like it. It's a great mental and physical rejuvenating period for me. I actually played hockey this weekend. What a blast, but my body is SO not in hockey shape. But a few old time Bruins showed up and that was a lot of fun. They still have crazy skills even if their speed and quickness aren't what they were. |

Veteran 498 Redding, CA | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Hi all, well my first "busy day steps on running plans" since starting the run 5 days a week plan happened yesterday. By the time I got home from work, chiropractor, kid's kung fu class, grocery shopping, etc. it was just too dark to hit the road for a run. I need to pick up some after dark running gear! I did get my run in this morning though so I'm not off the wagon or anything. With so many Junkies doing HIM and IM events this year and next I think I'm catching the bug. I've been considering doing a HIM next year for a while. I really wanted to knock out an olympic this year and then make the next step up in 2014.That didn't work out schedule wise this year, but I'm thinking maybe an early season olympic next year and then continue training up for a HIM. So I'm going to try and get into Vineman 70.3 when the registration opens next week. I've heard the online registration can sell out in minutes, but I'm going to take a shot. If that doesn't work out then maybe Lake Stevens in August or Silverman (Las Vegas) next October. |

Expert 1439 Tallahassee | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Vero, IMFL is still for grabs for Nov. 2014. All you have to do is be here very early Sunday Nov. 3rd if you want my volunteer spot. It closes out in minutes. Brenda, hope you feel better. Dina, take the time you need. It is better to get well and energized than to keep going and start disliking the entire sport. Good Luck |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Vero good to see that you've been able to keep up with the run frequency. I think doing an Oly and then a HIM later on is very doable for you. It's actually a good idea to try and get the Oly in before the HIM. I think it'll help you in your preparation in training for the HIM and a good way to gauge your progress on the way to the HIM. Karl if I wasn't doing IMMT next year I'd grab that IMFL spot from you. If I even entertained any thoughts of doing a second IM next year my wife Joyce would kill me! I mean it too, I'd be on one of those Discovery ID shows for sure lol. But being serious I am entertaining the idea of doing another IM in 2015. There is the Challenge series which is big in Europe they took over the IM Canada location in Penticton well they have a new race in Atlantic CIty, NJ in July for 2014. They also have a relay option which is very appealing to me. I may consider this race for 2015 and I have a friend who is already signed up so I will be able to get good feedback from him. With all this A type talk I think I'm gonna blow today off from training. I need a day off so I'm taking one. I also signed up for another run last night. It is in January and it's the 10 mile run to the brewery. You can't have any more incentive to do a run than that could you? You run 10 miles and then drink beer and lot's of it lol. I'll have a bunch of friends doing it so it should be fun and I'll treat it as a training run. |

Master 2327 Columbia, TN | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by trigal38 WOW - Junkies, somebody other than me better jump on that IM offer . Karl too bad we can't do a team or I would totally come swim for you and let you do the rest! Well I finally bought a road bike yesterday. We found a guy who refurbs used bikes in STL. We had to go to the city for a family reunion yesterday so we made an appointment. He had 4 choices in my size - I ended up with a Raleigh Professional. It is a steel frame with campagnolo bike components. It is older (2003) but in seriously great condition. Only one little scuff and some tape keeping a decal on. My searches on craigslist were coming up with newer bikes but a lot lower end components in my price range. This one is older but better components - fingers crossed I made a good choice. I just really didn't want to go totally cheap and end up with another bike I was disappointed in. JEFF if your out there I may need some help with fit! I'll get some pics up if you'll be around any. Or any Junkies really but it seems like Jeff is the one who replies most to fit questions. Don't worry...yes I'm out here. I've been going days at a time without reading posts though. So, for anyone that wants my input...on anything, please message me to alert me. We can still discuss via the board, but use a PM to get my attention and I will post. I love seeing new bikes and seeing people get set up in a good position! |
