Hey any of you guys try TRX before?  I am thinking of picking one up.  I never seem to have time to get into the garage and hit the weights, might try it as an alternative.

My chiropractor endorses them.  I've tried TRX at work with the department trainer and it seems legit enough.  However, for the price, I think you could make something very similar for a lot less money.

Hey Tim, a while back you were contemplating some SRAM wheels. Have you made a decision on those? I'm debating whether or not a set of 404 or 808 zipps are worth it being they are $1700 more.

Yeah, I've pretty much decided to buy the sram wheels, just haven't pulled the trigger.  Looking at Ebay and Craigslist, I can get a new set for about a $1000.  Sure the 404s and 808s will be lighter respectively, but for the price difference and my ability, I think the Sram set will work just fine.  I'm probably going to go with the S60s.

That sounds cool. I have a dilema now that I bought the P4. Had I got a P3 I would have gone down you're road of thinking. But when I purchase things like this, I like to match the part to the bike. I don't really need the zipp firecrest 808's, although from the writeups on them it seems like they are going to give me the greatest benefit. The SRAM wheels are REALLY nice!!! I always have the feeling I need to put the top of line accessories/parts on the top of line bike. We'll see how things go come bonus time at work this year. Best case scenario, I'll get a new S2 road bike and have them put the 808's on it. That way they could go back and forth between that and the P4.

ha!! I just read that Garmin bought Metrigear. Could that mean a more affordable PM option? Hmmmmmmm. Hopefully, they get this out over the winter and we'll find out.

Yes, probably another powermeter.  Cheaper?  I doubt it.  Garmin head units already are compatible with Saris PowerTap.

A lot of the critical reviews I have seen say the same thing, that you could just make your own. While I agree SOME people could possibly do that, I am not inclined to make something that I plan on supporting my entire body off the ground with. I'd hate to find out the hard way that it wouldn't hold me. And yes, they are a bit pricey, but you can recoupe almost the entire purchase price reselling it on ebay so net loss is maybe $20-$40. That's acceptable to me to try somethin new. And Drew Brees endorses it! It's gotta be awesome! Not to mention Jessi Stensland and my buddy from Zentri also use and recommend it :D

Whatever you decide, just make sure you buy the right depth rim for your ability.  HED cycling has some pretty good information on their website about wind, wind angles, and needed average speed for a given rim depth to become beneficial.  They claim that a rider needs to average 25-26 mph to reap the benefits of a 80-90mm deep wheel over a 60mm wheel.  This eliminates any thoughts of an 80 mm wheel for me.

The other thing to consider is braking surface.  An all carbon wheel will require special pads and can notouriously squeal.  Whereas, certain Zipp models and SRAM have aluminum braking surfaces with carbon structure.  And, other companies, market wheels with carbon fairings over aluminum.

One more thing, are the majority of the races you plan on riding relatively flat or hilly?  The deeper the dish, the more you need to lug up the hills.  Also, I've been told, that some of th deeper wheels can become difficult to handle on descents. I think this is more of an issue for lighter riders.

Just some thoughts.

dhopman - 2010-09-21 4:57 PM Is anyone else dreading the chilly fall weather that seems to be approaching quickly? It's time to make friends with the dreadmill and trainer again. Ugh.

Bummer on the foot man.  Fack no I'm not dreading it!  I can't wait for some cold weather.  Speaking of all the trainer talk lately, you guys ever check out sufferfest.com vids?  I have the first one, the downward spiral.  It's pretty dope to bang out a trainer ride to.  Anybody w/ winter experience care to share some tips/suggestions for out-season indoor workouts?  I'm invisioning easy bricks jumping off the trainer onto the treadmill!  Dark cold mornings in the garage cursing the sport!  Bike bottles of hot chocolate and santa hats instead of helmets!  Bahahaaha Laughing

Man that sufferfest stuff looks saweet! Way cooler than my stupid CTS VHS tapes that came with the trainer I bought. Maybe I'll spring for one of these - does it download to iTunes?

Well my run last night was successful and my foot wasn't a problem for the first time in a couple weeks. I ran with my MBA buddies which usually means we pushed the pace. Here are the splits:

Mile 1 - 8:01
Mile 2 - 7:46
Mile 3 - 7:58
Mile 4 - 7:28
Mile 5 - 7:07
Mile 6 - 7:27
Mile 7 - 7:22

Average pace for the 7 miles - 7:35 (2 seconds faster than my goal pace for the half marathon coming up on 10/3).

Nice.  You have really picked up your pace.  I think this just shows that there is a lot of validity behind higher volume equates to faster paces.

I got hit by a brick wall of some kind of throat/head thing on Monday, I'm just now coming out of the fog and feeling kinda normal again.  It hit hard, but at least it looks to be clearing out pretty quickly.  I'll probably hold off on any excercise till Friday at the soonest, just in case.

My new front wheel came yesterday (pre-owned Mavic Crossmax SLR), it's sweet!  I haven't weighed it, but the rim with tire glued on (previous owner ran it tubeless with Stans) feels lighter than my current rim alone.  I didn't actually 'need' a new wheel, but my existing one is beefy and worth some cash to someone who needs a stronger wheel (King hub, Mavic all mountin hoop) so I figure I am just swappin it out for a lighter one at no cost to me (I'm hoping to sell the old wheel for what I bought the new one).

Anyway, I'm itchin to ride the mtb.  Weather is perfect, bike is tuned and ready, I've got time, ... and I'm sick as $hit...  dang.

Yeah, I'm gonna get the other three vids when it finally gets too cold to ride.  I dunno, I only have music and podcasts on my ipod. It's a .mp4 file, you could email the guy and ask.  I got an 'older' file I guess when I d/l it and he refunded me part of the payment AND gave me the higher res file for free.  I hook my craptop up to the 46" LED and play it on there.  Looks freakin sweet.

you should read some of the info on the firecrest carbon clinchers. Zipp is claiming to have designed these to benefit at all speeds, not just over 23 or 25 mph or some other number.

Just to follow up on this.......

I did some reading today on the HED website, an independant, and Zipp's website. Conclusion: Money being no object, the Zipp 808 firecrest will be the best all-around wheelset for me. They claim to have designed these new wheels to benefit a wider range of yaw angles. I'm a bigger triathlete at 6'1" 165lbs and can more than likely benefit from a deeper rim. Although, second choice for me is a SRAM S80/S60 combo or HED jet 9/6 combo. The H3d/H3 combo is also an extremely good option, but less serviceable of a wheel and more possiblity of dealing with out of true problems that are unsolveable.

So, I need to find me a deal on the firecrests over the winter, or settle on one of the other options.

Good luck to you guys racing this weekend! I'm super anxious to see both RR's.

We had our annual 5k fun run at work today. I was in such a rush to get there I forgot my Garmin which turned out to be a big mistake. I finished in 20:52, just 3 seconds off my PR (not that I ever train for 5k's). There was nobody within reach for me to chase down at the end, nor was there anyone hot on my tail so I cruised in for the finish. I could have easily cranked it up to finish ahead of my PR had I known I was that close. It was fun to do a little speed session in the middle of all this monotonous distance training. I knew I finished 18th overall, some of us went for another 3 mile cool-down, then I hit the showers. Coming out of the showers, someone told me I earned some hardware - turns out I got 3rd in my AG (20-29)! I know this sounds stupid for a 5k fun run, but I never podium! It'll be exciting for a couple more hours then I'll get over it. 2nd in my AG was in the low 19's so I have some work to do for next year. =)

Speaking of distance, I'm scouting the Morgan Hill half course this Sunday. I'll do another 6 or 7 after that for 19 or 20 total. It should be an interesting morning. This will be my first time over 18 miles, uncharted territory here...I...COME!

Oooh, last thing for the day - I saw on TV that a new IM (Kentuky I believe) is going to air on Monday - channel 187 if you have Comcast.

Haven't been checking in much lately as works kept me pretty busy.  Training's pretty much been running 3-4 times per week.

Big news yesterday was that my son finally broke through in his XC race.  Yesterday's course was very hilly with lots of obstacles -- ironically, it's these hard courses he normally excels on (versus flat, easy courses where he crashes!).  He ran the 3 miles in 16:50 which is 30 seconds below where he was the previous weeks on the "easy" courses and finished second in the frosh-soph race!  His team won for the first time all year and was really pumped.  His attitude was totally different going in to the race -- very confident -- and he seems ready to step up even further.

Personally two big things were buying a new ipod touch last night and getting back in the pool this AM.

Great job!!! Looking forward to the RR.

I got in a 20 miler this morning...that makes 40.5 miles for the week! I previewed the Morgan Hill half marathon course and I'm really glad I did. The first 6 miles are uphill, mile 5 is the worst of it. Then there's an uncomfortably steep downhill. The rest is mostly flat...a couple little climbs but nothing like mile 5. From a pacing perspective, an even effort seems hard to achieve since you can't lag too much up the hills. I'll have to make up the time on the flat section without pushing it too fast and risking dropping people. This will be an interesting experience!

Man that's fast...I hope his confidence continues!

I hope the swimming went well - don't bring your ipod in the pool with you. =)
