Oh, yes, I ought to sell 3 kids.  Then I'll be able to buy a new bike, pedals (because I'm still in cages), a decent bike helmet, a powermeter, etc.  Haha   Nah, I'm good with what I've got.  Just need to keep at it.

Have you looked at the "pay it forward" thread in the classifieds section?  People give lots of stuff away for free (including a decent number of helmets and pedals).  You should check it out.

for less than $100 you can get a set of SPD pedels and tri-bike shoes.  That alone will give you about 1-2 extra MPH.  forget the aerohelment.  clip on aerobar (also to be had cheap on ebay) will give you about 1-2 extra MPH.

Someone at my race told me I'd go a lot faster if I got my feet out of those cages.  LOL.  Nice.  Anyway, how long would it take me to get used to using them?  I only starting cycling this past Feb.  I'm worried I'll be crashing and falling all over the place.

I switch this year. I have ridden cages for almost 40 years so I was really nervous about the swith, but I only had one small "crash" on the first day riding outside with them. SInce then no prob. I really feel the difference in my hill climbing. Make the switch and you will be happy.

To the gentlemen.... tri short you like best for HIM distance tris?  I've been racing in Aeveros since last year.  The pad is kinda shot, but that's what you get for $30.

Ok, you guys sold me on the pedals (the helping on the hills part really sold me ).  I wanted to log some more miles before I made the transition, but it's time.  Anyone got any brand recommendations?  How about shoes?  Think cheap but durable.

Jeff (rizer) - A Great White?  WTH!

Kelly - Thanks for all the feedback!!

Any tips for climbing hills?  I practice on them all the time, and I still really lose speed when climbing.  Is it just a matter of practicing more?

I think your hill climbing will improve immensely once your able to both push and pull with the pedals on the hills.  Other than that the only way to get better at climbing hills is to climb more hills.

Shaun swears by his Desotos and the best part is every time they wear out we send them back and Desoto either fixes them or sends him a new pair.  Just beware of the royal blue color, its rather "showy" in the ice holding region.

2xu is my favorite brand for basically everything tri. Of course it's crazy expensive - $85 or so for tri shorts. I look for deals when possible which are far and few between

I haven't done any HIM's, but I've been very happy with the Pearl Izumi tri shorts. I wear them 9 times out of 10 on my bike rides and never have any trouble at any distance. Plus, you can usually find them for a decent price ($40-$50) on most online shops.

I've also got a pair of Zoot ones...I don't wear those much because they show plumber's crack a bit too frequently. Since I'm not a plumber I don't want their union to come after me

My husband said I could buy pedals and shoes as early birthday gifts (turn 33 next month).  Woohoo!  Now...to get this ball rolling before my race on the 24th...or to wait until after?  Hmm.  I'm thinking immediate gratification

I'm too impulsive to wait until after, personally.

I think you just gotta get in and GO!  Is it a run start?  If yes, I would try to get in just before.  It seems when you get in cold water and get out, it seems warmer when you do have to get back in.  Other than that I've got nuttin!

You'll be fine.  Can't wait to hear all about it!

56 is COLD.  I would at least wear double swim caps (or a squid lid if you have one)band just go in and go hard.

Although the cold doesn't affect some people.  At IMCDA (water temps were 55-ish) Tim Snow went with a sleeveless wetsuit:

Tim Pre-Race

Unless the air temp is really warm, I would also have a long sleeve shirt to pull on in T1 to use on the bike to help me warm up.

So next week is my mother's 54th birthday and she told me that she would like a bike so she can start riding.  She's a true beginner on bike riding and I was thinking of getting her this bike:

12 mile long run this morning and then speed day at pool tonight.  Ick.  I added the Towpath marathon to my schedule (Oct. 9).  The race runs in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.  It's beautiful!  I have 7 more weeks of triathlon training, and then my tri season is over for the year.  I don't want to get hurt trying to do these long runs, when the triathlons are more important to me.  I think I'm going to incorporate some walk breaks into these long runs to reduce chance of injury, then I'll get rid of them after my oly tri.  I'm not going for a time goal at the Towpath...just running it the first time.

I know Paul and Terry are racing this weekend.  Anyone else?

56 is a little frosty but not crazy.  full sleeve wetsuit and swim cap and you should be fine.  I've been swimming in 62-3 degree water this week with no wetsuit without issue.  If you are very cold you could add a second swim cap.  I dont think booties are needed.  Most importnant: get in teh water and swim around a bit first so you get used to it.

just make sure you practice on them.  Also don't overpay.  The Look or Shimano entry level are just as good as the Ultegra and about $100 less.  I picked up the Simano SPD-SL (or whatever they are called... Rudy will know) for about $25 bucks.  The only real difference is weight and its like 5 grams.

Happy Biorthday Jen - when's the B-day.
