Master 2327 Columbia, TN | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by wbayek Originally posted by mambos On my front I am progressing well in my running, holding around 30 mpw but also getting in some intensity runs to work on the oxygen depletion! This past weekend I ran 2 5k's, the 1st one on Saturday was a little short and I ran a 21:20 and won! Of course the weather was nasty so no one showed up! Sunday I ran another at the exact same time of 21:20 and this course was accurate! Missed a PR by 3s but finished strong with my 3rd mile being faster than the 2nd mile! Then right after the race I ran another 3 miles at 8:45 pace, legs were stiff but not bad Overall goal is to get under 1:40 in my HM in November and hopefully find a 5k in December so I can go under 21! Then my 2013 goals will be met! at some point in all of this though I need to get back to tri training! Awesome racing. 1:40 is pretty aggressive, but a great target. Matt, 1:40!! That's great. Have you been doing any tempo runs? If you can run 7ish miles at 7:50 pace it does wonders for your confidence and your race prep. (but don't just start at 7:50....make it the last 7 miles of a 10 mile training run). Don't know how many weeks out from your HM you are, so you may not be in a position to add workouts like this to your preparation. |

Extreme Veteran 1123 Sidney, Ohio | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Originally posted by JeffY yeah, 1:40 is a little aggressive but earlier this year I did 1:44 and did not pace very well in the beginning which hurt. My weekly mileage has been just under 30 for the past 6 weeks. I have done several tempo runs but most are down around 10k with a pace around 8:20ish. I also have several 10 mile runs at a average of 8:30 pace, with several miles in the middle going down under 8:00. Last night I ran 10 miles on an out and back course, 5 miles out at 9m pace then coming back I dropped down to just a little over an 8:00 pace. Surprisingly this run felt some what easy, as my HR never made up past 165, and even then this was on an uphill section. My race is on November 9, so. I think I am going to get one more long run in on Tuesday with the same method, last half at lower pace. From there I will start backing down the intensity and the following week the mileage. According to McMillan I should be able to do 1:38 going off of my last 5k time. We will see.....Originally posted by wbayek Matt, 1:40!! That's great. Have you been doing any tempo runs? I am hoping to follow him on the bike but I can't know for sure where he might be because no one knows how many bike splits will be given. When/if I do post I will probably be very quick and only a couple of sentences. facebook will be the best wy to stay up to speed if you have an account. |

I think that's amazingly awesome! GO WILL, Go!!

Expert 1439 Tallahassee | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Wow, that is awesome that Will is having such a good swim. I hope the bike and run goes well too! Please keep us up to date. I just finished my HM, it was a huge PR for me. Previous PR was 2:04 which was my first HM last year and I was having IT band issues. Today was 145:48 I think. Things I learned. I'm not in very good shape, I struggled the last few miles. I tried carrying a water bottle w/ just the powder skratch in it and filled it at the 1/2 point and drank some on he way back. That worked good but the people I was with left me when I stopped to get the water and I had to push it hard to catch back up. But they were pretty so that was motivation. I thanked them for being such good escorts and the scenery was very nice. They were hoots to run with. I have to figure out what is causing my stomach problems, about an hour after every race where I push it hard, my stomach starts cramping and I spend all afternoon in the bathroom. I was thinking about a HIM but this race just about killed me but I am happy w/ my time, no way I could run after swimming and biking. My hat is off to anyone who has done a HIM or IM!!! |

That's an awesome time and a well deserved PR. For those who are not on Facebook the latest update is that Will is through 75 miles of the bike but Drik said he looked like he wants off lol. Sounds like he is doing great. The tracking website is pretty useless so Dirk is going to be our eye and ears the rest of the day I suspect. There is also no timing mats according to Dirk through 75 miles so looks like the timing is start and finish. Go Will! |

Karl great run, that is a massive improvement in your time! Sorry about the stomach issues. That reminds me of me and the headaches after races that put me on the couch the rest of the day. And don't sell yourself short on the idea of a HIM. Take your time for sure but if I can do it you can do it. HIM is all about pacing. |

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Karl I agree with Dina a HIM is definitely something you could do. If I can do a HIM or an IM you can defintiely do it too. Don't ever underestimate what you are capable of doing. For the update on Will he was 16 miles through the run with 10 miles to go. I'm sure he is a lot further along now and Dirk was thinking that he would probably get in at around 8:30 PM. So he has to be close to being done here. Go Will, bring it on home! |

I didn't start training last year until Nov. and I really started the IM training in Feb. so you shouldn't stress out about having an off week. Enjoy some down time and go into your IM training with a clear mind and a rested body. |

Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED PROGRESS finally I made some progress in the pool. I know it's just a workout and not a race but I am so excited! I swam with our local swim team coach and my friend Laura (the 3 hour marathon friend) and WOW, what a difference it makes when you are trying your hardest not to get lapped by coach LOL. These were probably my best times in 3 years! My best 400 today was 6:20, 200 in 3:03 and 100 in 1:23! Coach was going 1:12 for a hundred and 5:45 for a 400 . No way I can keep up with that! So, it looks like I am going to plan on taking an extra trip up to the pool on Mondays and swim with these ladies as long as they are going.

Expert 2380 Mastic Beach, NY | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Dina I'd have to agree with Karl. I don't think I'll ever be able to swim that fast. It sounds like you had a great swim session. I believe that is one of the ways you can get better by swimming with people who are as fast or faster then you are. I know it hasn't exactly worked for me in the swim but it's done wonders for me on the bike. Always good to have people who can push or challenge you to be better. I got out yesterday for my first solo MTN bike ride. It was great, I didn't wreck the bike and didn't kill myself in the process. I'm getting a little better. I just need to get out there and ride as much as I can, get more familiar with the trails and with riding the bike. It's a lot of fun and it is a great workout. The trails I ride are hilly so you get a real good workout riding them. For now I've only been able to ride once a week, I wish I could sneak in two rides on the weekend but that has not happened yet. I'm trying though. |

But there's no way I can make it b/c we are here in NC until Monday. I can't even bring myself to ask my wife to leave vacation 2 days early after I've asked her to support me this year w/ B2B. I wish it was a week later, I would stinking buy a plane ticket and be there! Thanks for the offer though, really do appreciate it. |

Extreme Veteran 872 Tx | Subject: RE: ASPHALT JUNKIES Summer Bronzing Crew - CLOSED Hey everyone, sorry it's taken me a while to check in. Haven't been able to spend much time online b/c we took off the day after the race for the other side of NC and are staying here for a week of vacation. As for the race, first off I was amazed that Dirk drove all that way! So awesome to get to hang out with him some. And it was a huge blessing not only b/c Dirk and I are friends but also b/c he drove my wife and newborn around during the race. My plan before he showed up was just to have them try to meet me at the finish b/c it would have been too hard for her to get around and track me with the baby in tow. So Dirk blessed me in a huge way! Easily one of the coolest things someone has ever done for me! I'll try to get a race report up soon (I saw lots of interesting things). It was an amazing experience. Swim and bike conditions were not as good as previous years and I still managed to finish in 13:39, so very happy with that! A guy that finished right behind me told me that he finished about an hour faster last year. That makes me want to go back and try to go sub 13 hours next year... ha! I will say that this was a great race. It's not an IM brand, but the sponsor (PPD) is for a great cause and doing some really cool things and money from the race goes to a great cause as well. I did an IM brand half a few years ago and it had a little more fanfare, but this race was solid in my opinion (although they did have some issues with the tracking this year). Great course for a first-timer, great support on the course, etc. Plus, since it's not IM brand, it's cheaper and you can wait a LOT longer to actually pull the trigger and sign up. For any of you that have tossed around the idea of going for the full distance, I'll echo Tony - "If I can do it, so can you." I have a VERY limited background in all 3 sports. If you're considering doing one, I'd say the first question you have to answer is "Do I have enough time?" and if so, "Am I willing to spend it training?" If the answer is yes but you doubt your fitness (like I did), then find a race like this that doesn't fill up too soon, start the training plan and see that you indeed CAN handle the training, and then sign up and go for it. Just for reference, I took an entire year off from pretty much any working out. Gained 20 lbs. Then I started building base in December (5-10hrs of WO's per week). Started the beginner training plan here on BT in June (I highly recommend Silver membership for the benefits you get w/ the training calendar). Once I successfully got through a couple months into the 20-week plan, I pulled the trigger and signed up and the rest is history... In case you don't have time to read the RR when I get it up, here are the basics: Swim: 1:14 (rank- 289) T1: 0:27 (rank- 484) Bike: 6:31 (rank- 279) T2: 0:12 (rank- 423) Run: 5:12 (rank- 303) Overall time: 13:39 Overall rank- 316 So, a MOP finish and very pleased. Yes, I have some explaining to do concerning my transition times... ha! I'll try to do that in my race report... lol Edited by pistuo 2013-10-28 8:31 PM |

Yes, I have some explaining to do concerning my transition times... ha! I'll try to do that in my race report... lol Will congrats again to you. You did a great job with preparing for and then executing your race. I understand conditions were tougher for this year's race with the swim and also the windy bike ride. Your times are very impressive and you should be very proud of what you were able to accomplish as we all are of you. After taking a year off and then coming back to triathlon and doing an Ironman is no easy task and it is very impressive to say the least and to post a time like that for your first one is pretty awesome. And yes like you I do believe anyone can do an Ironman. It's nothing more than commitment, consistency and hard work. Ok well having the time to make the commitment helps too. Seems like you made a great choice in choosing the right race and also had the right plan in place to get you there. As far as B2B goes everything you've said is what I;ve heard about this race. They do a great job with this race and it is well supported. The course is a little friendlier to first timers since it's flat and fast and you typically get the benefit of the current for the swim. Unfortunately you didn't get some of those benefits otherwise you might have gotten closer to breaking 13 hours. Either way you had a tremendous first Ironman race. Now the goal for the next one is to get faster |
