Thanks Bryan, plan on starting serious this week.  Will do a better job.  Weather for riding has been impossible.  I don't have a trainer, so I have to work around that..  Also, can't find shorts that I am comfortable in.  I buy, try, and sell.  Any suggestions?  Anyone?

WAEF - Obviously our prayers and thoughts are with those folks in Haiti.  I am so sorry that this has become a more personal experience for you (wish this site had the hugging smilies as you really need one about now).  Its in these times that everything seems dark but it is not so.  People around the world are trying to help.  Getting out there and doing the swim challenge is the right thing, it will be difficult but just do it.  You will feel just a bit better.  BTW, this group provides encouragement and inspiration for wayyyy more than just Tri's.  We are here for you.  Please come back as often as you can.  (BTW, if you need a laugh feel free to PM me, I have a whole bunch of not ready for forum post jokes!!!! ;>

Billy - first thanks for the compliment!  I have toyed with the thought of doing the 1/2 in NO.  My boss and a co-worker are running it.   Also, check out the BT HIM plan, its pretty good but I would make a couple of adjustments.  If you decide to use it let me know.  Its a 20 week plan (I would make it 21 weeks) so it might be a little early for you to start.

Well ended up swaping things out and taking today as a SRD.  Will do my bike/run tomorrow.  Just felt I needed it, too tired.

I posted my thoughts about training plans in your blog. I DO not like bike shorts. They are bulky and I find them very uncomfortable on long rides. I LOVE my tri shorts. I have two kind Zoot and 2XU, I also have a pair of Oomph. IMO If you race in your tri shorts ...you should train in your tri shorts. That being said...are you sure its your shorts that are the problem? Perhaps its your seat. Alot of folks dont sit properly on their seats. Your pelvic "sit bones" should be on the back part of your saddle. Many of the saddles that are stock on bikes are really lousy!!! You need to have a good saddle to go the distance. Perhaps Gary and Bryan can address the male saddle issues

I am totally impressed with Garys motivation.

Dianne...shin splints are awful!!!!! Been there and done that, I feel your pain.

WAEF- my thoughts and prayers are with you. I have been injured and not working for the past few weeks. I have watched the disaster in Haiti since it happened. As lousy as I have felt with my stupid back problem, it puts it into persective when you watch how horrible it is for the Haitians.

Bryan, I dont like Infinit, tastes like salt to me. I might become a peanut butter purist like Gary

BTW...Dianne, your bike has extremely fast colors. You will gain speed for sure!

Billy - what are the issues with the Tri shorts?  I have several pair.  My favorites are a pair of Orca's.  I also have Aevero and a pair of TYR tri shorts.  Tried a tri suit once and did not like it.    One important question, are you eating enough Peanut Butter? Smile

Mav - now your talking!  Later we can discuss the qualities of a perfect knife to spread the Peanut Butter.Cool

Billy - at the risk of offending everyone in da Haus.....what lube are you using?  I know I know....very personal....I am a big fan of bike shorts (sorry Mav) for really long rides and also am a fan of my tri shorts (minimal padding) when they are properly lubed.  I have tried chamois butter, butt butt'r, etc but the two best ones I have found over the years are Assos cream and DZ Nutz....DZ Nutz was created by Dave Zabriskie...Assos makes great everything.  They are a bit more expensive but very nice.  Ask for it for Valentine's Day....smile.  I use a couple of different tri shorts as they are part of the kits I wear supporting two teams - one is Sugoi.  I also have two pairs of 2XU shorts that I really like...both of them.  What I have found is that you gets what you pays for in the area of tri shorts and I really appreciate some of the areas they protect if you know what I mean.

Peanut Butter Knives - for crying out loud ---- you don't want a serrated knife or you might gouge the bread....even a jelly dude knows that....and we all know that there is NOTHING BETTER for a PB and J than mushy white bread....I am hoping that you peanut butter snobs appreciate the mushy white bread......

I have done sprints and half marathons and full marathons and have never had to use any lube, but understand that I will have to int he ironmans, so, I haven't decided yet.  Probably not peanut butter.

Next, I was looking at the plans on BT, and need to know, do I need to get a paid membership or do I use the free ones?

I don't use the BT plans so I will let Gary and/or Mav comment.  I think they both have used them.  They seem pretty good as I recall.  There are many many sources at all different price levels out there....and a plan is not necessarily a place where you get what you pay for....some are definitely a better buy....

I use lube almost every bike ride but certainly any ride over one hour.

I would also consider my seat if that area is in pain or numb....neither is a good thing.  It may be an adjustment or an investment

First rule of riding "If you use PB for lube do NOT use Crunchy style!!!!"

As for the BT plan I believe the HIM plan is now free.

If you do use the BT plan extend it a week or two to account for holidays, family vacations or just an extra cutback week.  The nice thing about the BT plan is you can import it into your BT Calendar, even have it email you your workout for the day.  If it is time based for much of it.  So workouts will be 1 hr bike (Trainer or outside), small chainring, RPE of 3.  Has worked for me but I am only 6 weeks into it.  Come April 18th I will be able to tell you if it was enough.

Hey All!

Just wanted to say I'm still here!  I have been out of town all weekend for my son's hockey tournament.  Will be out of town for hockey again next weekend.  Haven't even had time to get on the computer.  I did my run Friday right before we left and then jumped on the trainer tonight around 9:30 so at least I got my workouts in!  Looks like everyone is working hard and doing great!!
The situation in Haiti is so tragic.  Our church sponsors a church and school in Haiti.  Several members have been there on mission trips.  So sad what has happened.

Need to get off the computer now and get some sleep.  Gotta teach the kiddos tomorrow!  They are first graders and we are discussing a class project of something they can do as a class to help Haiti.

I think I used the beginner HIM plan. The one criticism I have of the plan is that the swims are WAY TOO LONG ( I know Bryan, can you believe I an saying this???) SOme of the swim workout were close to 4K. Ridiculous for a race that is 2K. I never did the longer swims. That being said, I am a swimmer and swim 2K 3-4x a week. I never missed a long run or a long bike. I actually biked more than the plan called for and it helped me in the end.

As for butt lube...I defer to Bryan and Gary I dont know what Zoot shorts I have , they are just plain black with a fleece like chamois. I am a huge fan of 2XU and bought 3 pairs and a tri suit from them for this season. When I am injured I tend to shop

Good point Mav made about the swim.  I am substituting my Masters Swim class for the swim portion with a few long swims in.  I plan to build to several 2K swims, with one being 2.2k but that is it.  I will reserve 4k swims for a IM relay I plan to do someday.

Amy - nice job getting your workouts in!

Just wanted to let everyone know about a great Triathlon Symposium taking place in Indianapolis on March 13th.  I have gone to this the last 2 years and it's outstanding.  They have great guest speakers and there is a 60min indoor tri, a 6K 2 person relay race, 3 person stationary bike time trial, swim/bike/run assements programs and a ton of guest speakers.  I know this sounds like a plug for this event but I am not involved with it in anyway.  It's just an outstanding seminar for triathletes.  Scott Tinley was the guest speaker the first year.  It really got me motivated a couple years ago but the injury bug hit me and I was only able to do one sprint that year.  Having a 3rd child last year limited my racing to just running.  So this is the year.  Third time is a charm.

In any case, here is the website if you are interested. http://www.racelistings.com/register/events/flyer.asp?ID=1113

So I have been reading alot about tri shorts and biking shorts.  What does everyone practice swimming in.  Do you wear your tri outfit or regular swim wear.  Also, does anyone practice swimming in their wetsuits in the swimming pool?

I wear Jammers (speedo brand but definitely knee length as I don't want to scare anyone) in the pool.  Tried a two piece once but am not allowed back to that pool Wink.  Last year prior to a Tri I did do a pool swim with the wet suit.  Good to get the feeling of the wetsuit but way too warm for the pool and the chlorine will eventually do a number on your wetsuit.  After 200 meters I was unzipping it as I was getting too warm.  I wore my tri short/pants under it to get the complete race experience.   (LRR will be happy to know that I did not pee in my wetsuit, at least during that swim!)

LRR - did my one hour trainer ride with two scoops of Infinit.  Worked great between that and the day off I had a good ride.

OK, so since you guys brought up the whole seat comfort issue...

Now that I'm getting ready for this HIM distance, I'm wondering about the sand.  Am I going to get it everywhere that I don't want it?  If I do, is there a tasteful way of removing it?

My swim is in Lake Erie, so I'm not sure what I'm in for in that department...

One of my Sprint Tri's started/ended at a sandy beach... I brought my sandals to the beach to run up to transition with them... I found that the sand bothered me in my sandals and ended up taking them off (it was about 1/3 mile run)... If I recall the race was not wetsuit legal... but the sand didn't bother me anywhere else.  My suggestion is to train where you're gonna race if at all possible.

Thank you, everybody, for your wonderful suggestions about nutrition and recovery stuff. It resurrected my memories of what works, so I'm checking out Infinit and some other stuff

Bryan, yes, I have heard of Runners High'n'Tri.. in fact, been there several times, bought running shoes, goggles, caps from them The owner gave me the idea to keep all my race bibs He has them plastered all over the walls by the ceiling. kinda cool.
But I may go by there (it's about 30 min from my house) and see what gels they have and maybe try a few I haven't had before.

Bryan, if I am running a 1/2 in June and a full in August, which plan do I need to use?  A 20 week full training plan or a 20 half training plan and then following the half pick up where the full would be at that time?

Never have had a problem with sand in my bathing suit and I have done races that have involved ocean swims. Typically I wear a wetsuit but on races where I just wear a tri suit I have not had a problem either. As far as sand on the feet goes that can be a problem. I use a squirt bottle with water and small towel in transition to give them a quick wipe. I wear socks on the bike and the run, I have had blisters occur if I dont wear socks. Practicing transitions is an important part of training. ALOT of time can be wasted in transitions. There are plenty of videos on transitions on You Tube and Pete posted his transition practice quite a while ago on this thread!LOL

Saddles on the bike are VERY important...especially for longer distances. I like the butterfly type seat. Most places that sell saddles will let you try them and you can exchange if it doesnt work. They actually will fit you for a saddle. At most bike stores they have a gel like pad that you sit on and it measures your "sit bones" based on that measurement they can advise a saddle that will be most comfortable for you. I dont use any chamois butter or other lubes...doesnt work for me. I love my saddle and can ride for 5-6 hours without any discomfort. Anything after 6 and I just want off the bike!

I sat on one of those gel things when I bought my bike.  And they said that there is no problem if I want to exchange it if it turns out to be the wrong one for me.

I'm glad to hear no one has really had issues with sand.  I'm not too worried about my feet - I expected that

Btw, Bryan... you mentioned the MAP test. I asked the PT who will be doing the body age test on Thursday for me about it when we talked last Saturday, and after crunching numbers in his head, he quoted me $140. I wonder if they just figure out their own prices or change them as they please? or if that increased since you did it last? or if it varies by location.. hmmm.. I wonder if i should call and ask a different PT that same question? $50 is a pretty big difference if it's all circumstantial.

But I definitely want to do that test and plan on it, just may have to wait a month or two till $ is saved up.
