Here is a silly newbie question....do you wear bike gloves when racing sprint or olympic distance? I have not in the sprints I have done, but I have my oly next week and wondering if I should?

up to you. I didn't in my oly last year, but I don't think the 5-10 seconds it would take to put them on would hurt my times any. The podium is safe when I'm entered.

Accomplished my longest ride ever today. 81 miles and 5,000 feet of climbing. I've been wanting to ride to Watch Hill beaches in Rhode Island for a while. The plan was to get up and leave by 5:30 am to beat the heat. Didn't leave until almost 7:00, and I was riding solo. Damn it was humid today. At about mile 30 it dawned on me most of the ride was downhill to the beaches. That made for a tough 40 miles to get back home. Nutrition worked out perfectly for me. 3 bottles water, 3 bottles Gatorade, 4 gels and 2 powerbars. Never had a GI issue. Although, at mile 70 I started to feel the pain. Beautiful roads all the way there and back though. Now let's see how the back responds in the morning.

Jen, why do you wait until it's light out?  I like to run in the dark, but there is some minimal lighting around my neighborhood so I can see bumps and road hazards (usually).  Just curious why you wait.

Speaking of running in the dark, I didn't get up early so I'm just heading out now for my run.  Wish I got up early, it's humid out!

Good luck racers!

There is a lot of crime in my hood, and I'm scared to run alone in the dark!

I thought that was it, couldn't remember. Will your new house be in a safer area?

New house is in a much safer area (family friendly and boring ).  I think I'll be ok running in the dark there!  It's weird where I live now.  It's very urban, and there are nice pockets of houses and scary pockets of houses, so some of the scary drifts into the nice.  If you make a left when you leave my house and run 1 mile, then you'll be in a very, very crime ridden area of Cleveland Heights.  I'll be happy to leave for this reason, but I am sad to be leaving a community that is heavy on the arts.  It's also very liberal, diverse, and progressive here.  My new hood is pretty conservative.

uhcoog - 2012-07-15 2:48 PM Fun race today.  8th in my AG.  The field was a lot faster than I anticipated.  As someone pointed out to me College Station is an hour and a half from most metro areas in Texas and it was a big deal in the Aggie alum community.  So I'm pleased.  Things I learned: Seeding yourself aggressively is important in a pool swim because everyone else is over ambitious so you get stuck behind slow people, also I need to push to find a rhythm right out of T2.  I didn't find a run rhythm until mile 2 of a 3.1 mile race.  In the big picture of racing halfs and fulls not a big deal, in a sprint it's a killer.

Fantastic job, Scott!

8 weeks out from Pumpkinman. I was in the saddle at 5:15 to beat the heat this morning and put in a quality 60 miles. I planned on doing all my hill work the first half and then doing the flats down by the beach the second half. Great plan but man the winds were awful. I was either fighting a head or cross wind my entire way back. I was on this flat that I can normally cruise at 19+ on with a 130-ish heart rate. I was going 17 with my heart rate in the 140's and just could not penetrate it.

Any how with 8 weeks left I just still feel beat up from all the extra volume I've done this year to make the jump to the HIM level. I was hoping to improve on Patriot but I just know if I'll ever feel fresh again until I take a couple of weeks off after Pumpkin. I don't know how the guys in the Tour do it day after day for three weeks.

I am 8 weeks out from my first HIM (also my A race of the season), and I am feeling the same as you.  I've spent much, much more time on the bike this year.  I will surpass my bike total from 2011 in a week or two and the season isn't even close to being over.  I'm taking 2 weeks completely off after Cedar Point - working on my new house, sleeping in, playing with the kids, getting the 2 tats I've wanted for a while but couldn't get because of pool swimming, etc.  My husband and I are having a huge party the weekend after Cedar Point, and I plan on getting pretty bombed, as I've abstained from alcohol for the last 9 months (drank a handful of times at most).  I will be taking at least another 4 weeks after those 2 to do whatever activities float my boat - yoga, pilates, and strength training.

So it's always good when you hear people in front of you in these seeded swims say "Yeah, I haven't actually done the distance in a while, but I just took my 100 yard time and multiplied it by 4."  SOB!!!  That's a lot of tapping on feet to get by.

Oh and 1500m recovery swim this morning.  Think I'm going to use missing the podium by 14 seconds to fuel my training for a while.

Michele told me about a deal on Blue Seventy wetsuits at Nytro.com, and I decided to pull the trigger on the 2011 model that was on sale.  Didn't clear it with my husband, and I'm just hoping he glosses over that charge when it appears on our credit card statement.  We usually only discuss purchases over $200.

That's what I hate about them. I seeded myself fairly accurately last time and still passed a bunch of people.

I was thinking along the same lines of doing nothing but yoga and core work for the first two weeks and then for 4 weeks after throwing in 2 hours of cycling, 1 hour of running and 45 minutes of swimming for a month just to do some cardio but give my body and brain a much needed break.

I checked and your race is the same day as mine........meet you at the ice baths. I also noticed you have a couple of marathons in the books so doing the HIM shouldn't be too much harder for you.

I hope you're right....that the HIM isn't too much harder.  I worry about the bike.  Doubt has started to make its lovely way in to my head, and I'm starting to experience some anxiety.  Physically I know I will be well prepared for it; I just need to make sure my head is in the right place.

Don't know about the ice bath.....never tried it.  Does it feel really good after a long race?

Jen follow your plan on the bike and you'll be fine.  Basically just don't overcook it.  Trust your training.

Hey Kelly.  Apparently someone held a camp at the IMNYC site and people who normally swim mid pack IM swims were swimming almost sub 1hr.  Might have been EN, I don't know.  My buddy who swam a Texas A&M jokingly said that he might come in around 40 minutes and that people could go 1:15 side stroking.  Just food for thought.

Think IMNYC will be wetsuit legal?  My guess is no.

The swim is very similar to the NYC Olympic. I did three Olympics last year and two of them my time was 25.5 minutes or a 1:33/100 yard pace. NYC I did in 18:35 or a 1:08/100 pace and that's with a really stiff wind which was causing 1-2 chop. The current will make you faster for sure.

That's surprising.  Cleveland Tri wasn't.  I think the water temp was greater than 82, I believe.  Going to be the same this year.  I hope it cools down a little for Cedar Point in Sept.
