When you say dig deep, do you mean stretching out as far as you can in front of you or trying to reach down to the bottom of the pool or as far as you can as you bring your stroke back?

Sorry to hear about the stress fracture Billy.  You need to be very careful with those and don't try and come back too quick otherwise it will happen again.  I have been told Pool running is great for stress fractures.

I do a fingertip drag, then fingertip entry, then dig deep. Then I wait til my other arm "catches up with the other one" then do my pull...So, the "dig deep" part is on re-entry - not on the Pull...  hope that makes sense.

Yeah, makes sense.  Coach has been working with me on it.  Here is the link to the thread:http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=193596&posts=40&start=1

The other thing is it looks like she has her head much farther down then I do, almost to the point of having her head completely submerged (at least it looks like in the video).

I have my swim video on Saturday and am hoping I can come home with video for you folks to review.  It's only $5 so I am a bit concerned that nothing is going to be recorded or at least burned to a DVD.

Someday I will get this swimming stuff figured out.

Billy...bummer you have a stress fracture.  I'm glad you are following doctor's orders.  I bet you will be fine in 4 weeks.

Gary I'm in the same boat as you still trying to figure out the swim.  As of now I'm just self taught by the TI video and with some help from my brother.  But I have found a great swim coach and just have to get our schedule worked out!  I'm excited about it!  Hopefully it will help!  I'll be anxious to see your swim video.

Mav what a bummer to have to pull out of Boston but I know that things happen and there is always a risk of injury during training.  What happened?  It may be in previous posts but I have not had a chance to read through all of them.

I was lifting heavy luggage into my car and twisted the wrong way, I have a bulging disc which is no big deal except I cant run or bike. Its been almost 4 weeks and I am much better. It was too much training to miss in the build phase for Boston. So for this year it will remain a dream. I am doing IMAZ this year and I need to be careful.

Wow! Who would think from lifting luggage.  I bet that was painful!  I'm glad it is much better!  You have a great attitude!!  You never know what little thing can happen to interrupt training.  IMAZ was my brother's first IM.  How many have you completed or is this your first?

This is my first!!!! I am very excited. I have done a HIM and plan on doing RI 70.3 this July and perhaps another in Sept as part of training. We will see. I have done an IM swim as part of a relay team and I have done many long rides. Never have I run a marathon ( and it is doubtful I will "run" AZ). I plan on having a BLAST. I have friends that are also joining me and I have a BT friend in AZ. ALl in all it should be an adventure of a lifetime.

Bryan is here...finally....I have been travelling a lot lately folks and my iphone and BT do not play well together right now.  They tell us we are getting an ap...boy that will be nice.

First - Billy take care of the foot.  Debbie has had three yes 3 stress fractures....they take TIME....even when he says you can run, I would deep water run instead of on the street...then I would go back SLOWLY...not running SLOWLY but building distance SLOWLY....take your time and you should be okay.

FBP - how is Mrs?????

HIM bikes - I would ride 3 hours 3-4 times before my HIM with the last one 2 weeks before the event.....I would run no more than 90-120 minutes....don't overdo the run - you will be fine.....and finally my long swim before the HIM was 40 minutes straight.  I don't really worry about the distance covered, the time is the more important piece.  When I did IMAZ last year, my long run was 2:30 hours - my bike was 6 hours and the swim was 1:15.....everything worked out just fine.

Headphones on the bike - If I catch you wearing headphones on your bike I will cut off your ears and smash your Zune/Ipod with a sledge hammer, take away your bike and make you walk home.  NO NO NO NO NO NO NO headphones on the bike - unless you are on a trainer....IOW, if the wheels are turning on something other than air - NO HEADPHONES .... understand?  Any questions?  By the way, if I catch you without a helmet, I will bash your head in with the aforementioned sledge hammer - since it is just a matter of time until you do it to yourself I will save time and get your family the insurance money sooner.  Folks, riding is dangerous - not because of you but because of everyone else.  Please don't do it.  Either one.  Now, if you are still not convinced, I will be happy to send you an xray of a broken neck - the one that belonged to a friend of mine after he was removed from the back passenger window of a Ford Explorer.  He swears if it wasn't for the helmet he would be DEAD....not hurt, DEAD.  His doctors all agree.  As does his sister, who happened to be riding behind him and narrowly missed hitting the Explorer too.  (The driver dealt appropriately with the accident fortunately).  Any questions, let me know.

Billy - I would do the IM plan and add a little more distance prior to my HIM if I wasn't covering enough during the build up phase.

Saddles - I like the Adamo but I also like the Cobb Cycling Saddles (they have a 6 month money back guarantee).  cobb Cycling is John Cobb's company - John Cobb participated in the design of the Adamo.

Lena - I would definitely check on another PT's price.  Seems a tad high but I haven't had a MAP test in about a year.

We have about 6 more weeks of the one month wonders......then the classes will be back to normal.  I don't like getting to the gym way early either but I try to remember that not to long ago I was one of those who filled up the bikes as a newbie.....I also go very early to try to get in a longer ride.  If you go early, or stay late -- try this for a tough little challenge.  5 minute spin W/U or just flat road ride, then Spin intervals of 1 minute all out, 1 minute recovery....times 10 (next time 15) then a 5 minute cool down (If you do it right, you will need this 5 minutes and there you have another 30-40 minutes filled.  Your goal is for the last 1 minute interval to be as "fast"/intense as the first....this is a mental exercise as well as a pacing exercise.....just get after it....no puking....

Biking is going great, saddle soreness is almost not an issue.  Not even wearing biking shorts, havent come in yet.  Started with a swim coach at the Y last week and my stroke count is down to 16 from 22 in 25 yards.  Rotation is much better, life is good and getting better.

Will try deep water running.  What about elliptical.

No elliptical in my opinion.  But I am no doctor....that's what you pay her/him for.....ask if you want but I bet you the answer is NO and let me remind you how long your season is compared to 6 weeks of rest.....ride the bike, swim then if doc says it's cool, deep water (no touching the bottom) running....I just want you well as soon as possible....if you ride and swim you will lose VERY little fitness....

Welcome home Bryan!

Billy ...Bryan is a firm but loving MOM!!! LOL

I must agree with Bryan as someone who has had a stress fracture. They are usually caused by "overuse". The cure is to REST.

I had a rotten bike crash in July and all I could do was swim due to a broken jaw. Damn near killed me! I had 6 weeks no biking or running. Once I got cleared... I started right back up. I raced as part of a relay team on my bike one week after being cleard and averaged 19.2 mph for 25 miles ( my fastest race ever!!!) We won first place for the womens relay team. Moral of the story...you really dont loose any fitness if you take time off...you just heal your injury. Of course noone could tell me that during my six weeks of recovery, I was NOT happy. Dont worry you will be fine

I vote for water running. It really is a good workout. If you can use a water belt, your form will be a little better, but a noodle can work in a pinch. If you can keep from getting sloppy, try doing it without the belt. It's a lot harder than you'd think.Another option that might work for cross training (although I couldn't do it) is the NuStep - if your Y has one. It's a stepper that you sit on and do with your arms and legs. I see people with injuries leave that foot off the machine and run it with just their arms and one leg. I'd rather swim and water run for my cardio, but it might be an option if you need it.

Someone asked for an update on Mrs FBP - consult with the neurologist went well. Still not sure what "it" was but he said unlikely it was a mini-stroke. CT scan was normal. Still waiting some bloodwork results but so far nothing out of the ordinary. Permission for her to resume driving was the highlight of the visit!!

Freddy - good news about DW!

Up early, actually way too early but heading off to my swim video clinic.  Should be interesting.  Yesterday did my first full brick.  The last 5 minutes of the run was a bit tough.

Swim video analysis today.  Cost $5 and it was the best $5 ever spent on swimming.  They had an underwater camera, Tivo box and a wide screen TV.  While they were setting up I was the test swimmer and got a few extra laps in.  Then they had all of us (6-8) swim down the lane past the camera and return in the next lane.  What I learned:

Perception versus reality - very different!!! Duh!

Coach has been telling me my feet go wide, thought I had that corrected.  Nope, watching the replay of my swim. Coach pauses the video when I am taking a breath.  Looked like I was getting ready to do the splits, legs everywhere!  I am surprised that I even continued to move forward!  Next lap had me use a swim buoy but still kick.  Much better.  Next lap, I do what I think is an almost non-existant kick.  On the video it's much better but still had one wide kick.  WTH? Did it a few more times and got better.

I have good hip rotation and my head is almost perfect position according to the coach

Need to work on my catch just a bit.  While he said it was really good I needed to scoop more.  Need to watch the video that SC (Lo-Daddy on this site) provided.  I have the high elbow but don't have the technique down perfect.

Overall I am hoping they offer this again in a month or two.  It was fun and educational as we all hung on to the side of the pool and he went thru each persons swim.  Nice to know I was not the only person surprised by what I saw.

Gary - awesome info on your swim video... I've been afraid to try that... plus, they charge MUCH more than $5 for that here.

Today I'm doing something different - I'm taking a course to become an USAC official (USA Cycling)  The course is free, but there's about 600 pages of manuals that we'll be tested on at the end of the day. Wish me luck! At least I should be able to answer any of your questions about cycling racing rules. No mention of Triathlons, but it does go into Time Trials...

Won't be doing my swim class today as this course will take ALL day!

FBP - glad the wife is ok and is cleared to drive again.
