Today: 35' on the drainer - my 20' power test sucked, mentally I wasn't in to it so I cut it short and went for a slow and easy jog.

11.4 mile run in the rain at 43 degrees.  Not pleasant, but it beats the treadmill.

Well Mark, it's easy to be confused. This is complicated stuff, especially when you have to take into account that pigs tails swirl clockwise up here and counterclockwise down there.

48 min swim this morning. Love the extra motivation a challenge brings.

Also began to organize the list by points, so make sure I didn't erase anyone.

Yesterday after work I went to the pool with my 3 yr old (he is taking swimming classes and loves the pool). I was getting out of the pool, and  I hear this whimpering sound. A 5 yr old girl is threading water in the middle of the pool, about 10-15 yards away, eyes as big as saucers. Her mom (who was tending to her 3 yr old outside the pool) is running towards her....I just dove into the pool and was there before her mom could take two more steps. Grab her and handed her to her mom.

I don't think i saved her, as her mother would have been there in a few more seconds, but I think I prevented her from going under and then again, her mom didn't look (or ran) like the athletic type to me. Just scary how quick this things happen. The girl can swim (I found out later), but was using a kick board, and I guess that when the kick board got out from under her she panicked.

Now if I can bottle that 10 yrd burst of speed I displayed for a whole swim portion of the race, i will be golden.

Matthews - Sam< I'm also in the most beautiful country in the world just the other side of Mark so I'm 3 hrs behind him.

Sorry Matthews, didn't know that. Its cool that you guys get the news of the day before us, so you guys know who is going to win tonight's sport games, what lottery number are going to come up, etc. A guy could make millions with that information.

It will be fun to start another challenge to keep the motivation going and hope everyone is doing well with their training / health / and life in general!  On my side, my volume starts to pick up from this week going forward, so we will see how it goes in terms of doing multiple training events.

Quick question regarding the rules, according to my plan there are days where I have to do for example two bike workouts in one day.  They are separate workouts, one probably in the velodrome in the morning for tempo speed and the 2nd one at night on the trainer for interval workouts.  The same goes for running, there will be some days were I have to do an interval run in the morning at the track and a tempo run outdoors at lunch time.  I'm assuming I can count this two separate workouts of the same discipline (running or biking) as two workouts on a given day?  Please let me know your thoughts.

Separately, today I had a good long run at my Maff. rate and was able to do 18 miles in 2:47 with an avg HR of 138.  I'm starting to believe in that dude Wink Still need to do a bike workout which I will do and log later. Cheers!

I believe the rules allow you to count only one workout per discipline per day (keeping in mind you can only count 6 days per week).

Gabe,

I haven't looked for the post, but I recall Ernesto specifically saying that you CAN'T do that. That is, you can only get one point a day for each activity (S/B/R). To get two or more points a day, you have to do two or more different activities.

(Don't worry. You will still win anyway!)

Thanks Chris and Mitch for the prompt response and I will only count then 1 workout for each discipline.  Based on the volume of my plan, I'm positive this challenge will go to someone else Smile.  However, I will enjoy the much needed motivation that comes with the challenge!

btw forgot to mention yesterday - went for a swim in my local club. The boiler broke and the water was 75 degrees - still managed my 30 min drill set. Now I do beleive thats wetsuit legal and has me thinking that if I can mange to swim in 75 why buy a suit in the first place!? yes that was rhetorical - it wasnt the most pleasant 30mins :-)

Just did my sprint tri in 73 degree water without a wetsuit. I grant you that I am not a cold prone person, but the day was overcast (so no sunny warmth afterwards), and I actually found the water quite refreshing. Maybe 30 minutes could be too long, but I felt I could swim in water like that for a while.

Living in Florida, I thought the same thing, but a suit will not only keep you warmth, it will help you swim faster, so I might get a wetsuit for my November Olympic distance race, which is normally wetsuit legal (and might be my first olympic distance race).

Having said that, I struggle to get in a pool with water below 80, so maybe cold salt water feels  less cold than cold pool water?

Sounds like my birthday present will be a wetsuit...thinking DeSoto based on two piece and my experiences with their customer service.  Any other thoughts / recommendations?

Had a fun conversation with my wife today - she says, "why don't you just admit you hate swimming move on and just don't do it."  My reply is that I will become a swimmer and I will learn to like it.  The key is getting to the pool on a regular basis so it becomes easier.  Nothing that is hard to do is enjoyable for too long.  Sort of like when I started running.  It took awhile for it to become enjoyable and fun...we'll see!

Mitch - I have been swimming in earnest for 2.5 years and it has taken a long time to "like" to swim. I put in over 200K yards last year and I would say some of it was fun and enjoyable, but at times it feels like drudgery.  However, in December, I decided to blow up everything and got a swim coach.  Since then I have been re-learning my stroke and have focused on swimming right and not fast.  It is hard to enjoy something you are not particularly good at, but I have made the committment to improve my swimming.  So far, I am seeing some results, but I will never be a real "swimmer".

I had a coach for a bit in 2009...her availability and my workout schedule didn't mesh to well and the cost wasn't really acceptable.  I'm thinking of going the MAster's swim route at my local Life Time Fitness?

Mitch and Joe, I share your feeling and am also not a big fan of swimming.  However, similar to Joe right now, I started swimming last year from the beginning with a swim coach and it was a good experience to learn proper swim technique (as you know, of the 3 disciplines, swimming is the one were technique makes the biggest difference).   I know I need to improve my technique even more and its an ongoing process, but due to the time demands of the IM training I decided to switch pools and am now swimming on my own and focusing on endurance and speed work.  After my first IM I may go back to a swim coach to work more on technique.  The only thing that is making swimming a little more interesting for me now, is to record and analyze the workouts through my Garmin 910XT (which I heard a rumor Ernesto was going to give out to the members of his group Wink)  Does anyone use any music player device in the water and which one to make the swims less monotonous?  DC Rainmaker has a wealth of info on several options, but not sure if its a worth wile investment.

Separately, I did a 45 min recovery ride on the trainer at lunch time and am updating my challenge post:

I train in the cold, swim in ice water, and fight the wind at every turn, but there is nothing I face that will kill me (except hunters and tourists driving poorly). Yikes that is one freaky spider!

Decided on my next race - April 21 Sprint (1/4 mile swim - 10 mile ride - 3 mile run). Not on my original plan, but decided to switch my May race for this because:

1) It gives me almost 2 months to train, and then another 2 months to my A race (June 17 Sprint).

2) Its like 20 minutes from my house.

3) Another small race that allows me to learn the ropes without that much going on.

So bewteen the March challenge and the race target, i should not lack motivation

I've done a 30min easy spin on the turbo and then a quick 30min swim on the way to work. Unfortunately i'm at work on my iPhone so can't update the thread properly. If someone could add me I'd really appreciate it.

We've got a fun couple of days coming up. I finish night shift in the morning and them we're heading down south for The Triathlon Show. I'm really looking forward to it. Hoping to pick up a few bargains along the way, and maybe get some advice etc. Chrissie Wellington is going to be there, although her talk is on Sunday and we'll be missing that because I have to be back for work :-(. But hopefully we'll have some fun.
