Subject: Road Bike question - Opinions Wanted
So I had ordered a Cannondale CAAD8 Optimo 2 63cm (i'm 6'5") with of course the local bike shop. I placed this order Sat before last, and just found out today that Cannondale said it would ship on June 30th. That is a long way out and I'm wanting to do my first tri in August.

Spare a long story. They have the Giant OCR 1 in stock in XL. So I'm debating on waiting, or getting one in the next couple days.

I rode some bikes, but as a beginner they all felt somewhat like I was riding a bike. And many bikes they have for riding aren't necessarily my size. So I've read do a lot of test riding, I don't even know exactly what I would be looking for in a "ride".

My budget doesn't really want to move out of the $1200-$1300 for the bike, knowing I have much more to get.

Thanks for all your help.

I think the frame on the Cannondale is a little better than the OCR frame, but both are great bikes.  You get much better components on the Giant.   I would probably go with Giant out of those two bikes if they were both in stock, and definitely if you have to wait 6 weeks for the Cannondale.

See if you can work a deal on some free stuff or a discount when you buy the Giant.  Make it seem like you are doing them a favor by "settling" for the Giant

Like maybe swapping out a double (compact?) for the triple crank.

Hmm.. Never thought of working it like that. Thanks for your opinions guys, so far it seems I'll be getting the Giant unless we have some show stopper opinions before the end of the day.

Jim. Checked out your blog, some funny writings.

Followup question.

For a few hundred more would it be worth getting the:

Giant OCR Alliance 1

Well the Giant has better components on there. The Cannondale... if it's the same price as the Giant, is overpriced for all Shimano Tiagra parts... considering the Giant has all Shimano 105's.

The Giant OCR1 is the better deal. If you enjoy riding it, then get that one. That's my humble opinion.

And if you go for the Cannondale, you can get a Trek 1000 for about $500 less with about the same components.

Composite? Excuse my ignorance here... but is that carbon?

frame- fomulaOne Composite, Compact Road Design.
fork- fomulaOne Composite w/alloy steerer

If it's carbon, then it's worth paying the extra $300, because otherwise it's pretty much the same as the OCR1 component wise. If it's not carbon, then I'm not really sure why it's $300 more.

I bought an '06 Giant OCR3 in January, which was my first new road bike of my adult life. I trained on a borrowed road bike for last season since all I had was my mtn bike.

I worked with the LBS and ended up having them swap out most of the components (front and rear DR, shifters / brake levers, stem and crank set) for 105 or ultegra. I believe they had to change the rear cassette to allow this (switch to 9 speed from 8 speed), and I ended up with a 105 double crank rather than the stock triple. I'm very pleased with how it has all worked out so far and would recommend Giant to those looking, assuming it fits.

edit: realized you are looking at the OCR1 - which already has a better component mix. So my comments might not be that relevant. Enjoy the new bike, whatever you choose!

Here is a link to explain some of it. Still clear a mud for me.

Sounds like carbon... with maybe something else Giant created? Heck if I know.

formulaOne is Giant’s proprietary composite technology that is comprised of two core components: the materials used and the process they’re put though to create Giant composite bicycles. It’s a painstaking process that begins with bare carbon thread and ends with an entirely hand-made composite frame. It’s more than materials and technology, it’s a promise of superior quality and performance that no other major brand can make.

Yea, that might be worth an extra $300.

I agree wtih what everyone else has said. I ride a 2005 Cannondale R700 CAAD7 63cm. Mine has 105 brakeset and front derailleur, ultegra rear. Its a nice bike. Carbon fork and seatpost too. The giant also comes with Shimano SPD Clipless pedals. I ride with Nike Cato III mountain bike type shoes anyway, so SPD is fine with me. I bolted on a Profile Design aerobar and Im ready to tri!

I thought the Trek 1000 came with Sora brakeset? I don't care for that thumb downshifter, you can t reach it from the drop bars.
