Pre-race routine:

Pulled something in my quad 10 days before the race so nothing but walking, light cykling and a test jog 3 days before. Not the best preparation for a race.

Weather forecast was 10C/50F and light showers, water temperature 13/55, I considered a DNB (did not bother) but I woke up early on race morning and the sun was shining so I got in my car, pressed play on my motivational playlist and off I went, somewhat reluctantly.
The first song on the list is called “who wants to stay at home” . Well, funny you should ask….

The drive is 1h25 minutes and after about 30 minutes, I was happy to be on my way, this is going to be fun. I am just going to complete the race, take my time in transitions, not push too hard, as I am not sure how the quad will react.





Event warmup:

Kept many layers on as long as possible, then stripped down to just tracksuit pants and jacket over my trisuit and went for a little jog. Then on with the wetsuit, double swim cap and vaseline on feet, hands and face. Poured a thermos of warm water inside my wetsuit— a tip I read about the day before— and walked to the start. Got in the water and was pleasantly surprised to be able to put my face in directly without freezing my cheeks (when I swam at home last week, it took 3 minutes to get used to it). Maybe the water was warmer, maybe the vaseline did the trick.

As I don’t swim in swimming pools, I don’t swim in the winter so, as usual, this was pretty much my first swim of the year (other than 2 test waddles in the freezing lake).
I had decided to take it easy today but it didn’t make a difference on the swim as I only have one speed, easy. A nice swim, found a good rythm early on.
What would you do differently?:

Not differently but something I don’t normally do and did today, which I will do again is use my legs more. My feet were very cold so in an attempt to warm them up, I kicked faster (another tip I read about the day before) and I think this sped me up a bit. This is my best swim time on this course.

Took the time to dry myself off, put on some socks, gloves and a thin wind jacket.
This has to be my longest T1 ever. Quite enjoyed not rushing.
