It's been a busy few days for the May challenge teams and although this weekend isn't officially the end of a challenge week, I thought I'd post a quick summary!

Out East, the "East Coast Hipsters" got their name sorted quickly, although Artemis then had a ton of table troubles. Kleinrider has work hassles so isn't posting so much, Starrlinda wants to get out of her comfort zone, while Artemis just wants to stick to her plan. And when MDhillslug isn't organising the challenge, she gets to ride through gorgeous corn fields.


For the International & Expats (in both directions!), we've been comparing languages -- the team spans Australia round to Canada via South Korea, Japan, the UK and Iceland. This team almost certainly speaks the most languages and certainly has the coolest races: the Singapore Ironman and Belfast marathon to name two.

Over on the West coast (plus Hawaii) we have the team who probably have the most children! Lots of races are planned, with plenty of heavy-duty training, but there's still plenty of time for drinking wine (the fourth discipline!) and running into avatar and table challenges. These guys are convinced that "West is Best" and have started boasting about their weather (despite having several Seattle team members!)

For those who are "Stuck in the Middle", chat seems to be the order of the day. Let's hope these guys manage to train as hard as they post . All the talk about bi-lateral breathing seemed promising, but then there was a very long discussion about the various merits of ice-cream, cheesecake and all sorts of foods (what exactly are caramel bugles??)

Some rule clarification (based on the questions I've seen on the threads):

1. The 5% bonus is applied to all your training in the week that the brick/race takes place.

2. There's a maximum of 10% (2 bonuses) available each week (so spread your bricks out )

3. Only multi-sport races count for the bonus -- so duathlons and aquathlons earn you a bonus, but plain old running races don't (sorry, but it is a multisport challenge!)

I'll sort out the spreadsheets so that it contains a column for entering the number of bricks/races completed. Make sure you log them as well!!

I think I read somewhere in the original post that the max time between two disciplines to be considered a brick was 10 minutes???

10 minutes should be the absolute maximum time between disciplines for it still to count as a brick.

If you think about it, the purpose of brick training is to help prepare you for completing all three discplines consecutively on race day. And on race day (I'm guessing) you're not going to sit in transition for 10 minutes...

So while 10 minutes is the limit, I'd encourage people to try and keep their transition time down to a minimum. It does make a huge difference to your race performance.

OK, so all the spreadsheets should be updated by now -- the URL for each will have changed so make sure you're using the correct link!

You now can enter your total for each discipline for each week, plus the total number of bricks or multi-sport races you complete in that week. The bonuses are calculated automatically.

Remember that weeks run Sunday-Saturday which is slightly different to the standard BT reporting weeks (the dates are in the spreadsheet). Also, you only need to record your results to two decimal places

The overall team total is calculated by taking an average of everyone's individual average total.

I updated the totals on the old spreadsheet first (didn't realize there was a new one).  Then I went to update everyone's totals on the new one.  They are the same numbers, but we are much lower on the new spreadsheet (2% overall and swim is not coming out the same).  They should be the same or higher with the bonuses on the new spreadsheet.  Can you please check that out?

I think I figured the problem out.  In the old spreadsheet (and last month's), the team average was calculated by averaging the totals for the sports (row 95 in east coast).  In your new spreadsheet, you are averaging the individual's progress (column v).  That makes a pretty big difference.

That's right. Because not many people have strength goals, the alternative method of calculating the team's score gives an unrepresentative importance to them.

It's the end of the first, extended, week. Hopefully you've all found the NEW spreadsheet. (If you're not entering your results into a spreadsheet that has 4 weekly rows, then you're in the wrong place and your team is missing out on your hard work!!) If anyone isn't sure that they've got the right sheet, please let me know.

So, we're now 38.71% through the month -- although interestingly, no team is 38% complete

The standings are:

  TEAM% TOTAL 
 1 Central

 36.48%

 2 East

 31.59%

 3 West

 24.16%

 4 International

 21.65%

Make sure you enter the total amount you train and the number of bricks/multi-sport races you completed -- the spreadsheet calculates the bonus amounts automatically, so you don't need to work this out separately!

Some notes about spreadsheets...

1. They've changed -- I had to create new spreadsheets to accommdate the bonus calculation. Please make sure you are using the new spreadsheet:

You do not need to calculate the 5% bonuses - this is done automatically. There is a separate row for each week and all the cells where you need enter numbers have a border around them.

I am about to delete the old spreadsheets because it seems a few people are still finding their way there!

If there are any mistakes let me know and I'll get them fixed.

Week 2 update! 

So, we're now 61.29% through the month (almost two-thirds of the way there!) and the competition is hotting up! Central and East are running neck and neck as they fight for the lead, while West and International have some work to do.

The standings are:

  TEAM% TOTAL 
 1 Central

 55.94%

 2 East

 54.62%

 3 West

 48.80%

 4 International

 41.75%

Congratulations to Ren08 (east), tmporter (east), Medusa Ann (west), and smeador (central) who are all over 80% of their monthly goal!

Hopefully by now everyone is finding the correct spreadsheets to update

Week 3 update

We're now into the last week and 83.87% of the way through the challenge. The competition is getting very close and some great training is takign place.

So, the standings at the end of week 3 are:

  TEAM% TOTAL 
 1 Central

 80.58%

 2 International

 77.64%

 3 East

 74.59%

 4 West

 72.99%

Almost everyone had updated the spreadsheet for week 3 (I could only find one that definitely hadn't!) but quite a few people have started putting in week 4 results, so anything could happen in the final week -- and it's only the standings next Sunday that count.

For this challenge there will be one winner (the top team) and one losing team (bottom place). The winning team get to display the signature line "My team rule the world -- we won the May challenge". The losing team will have to change their avatar to a picture that represents the location of the winning team.

Any team that gets a team average of over 100%, can display the signature line "My team scored 100% in the May challenge".

I'll post the results (with some avatar suggestions ) on Monday -- I don't know exactly when I'll be able to do that because I'm starting Jury Service that week. If I'm in court all day then it won't be until the evening; if I'm dismissed and am back at work it will be sooner.

I don't know if I dare bring this up after all the spreadsheet issues and the fact that we are in last place, but was there some kind of 20% bonus thrown in on some folks?

I found in my run total that the formula had min((o103+p103)/m103),110.0)+.2.  I did see it on a couple of other folks on our spreadsheet. So it had inflated the run percentage. Also that formula doesn't seem to be capping folks at 110%.

Just thought I would share, also don't know if it is on other spreadsheets as well, don't want the numbers skewed when avatars are involved Laughing

I've taken a quick look at this and couldn't see the "+.2" -- looks like the spreadsheet has been edited/corrected since you posted.

There is a problem with the "110.0" -- in some cases this equates to 110% and in other cases it equals 11000% (which is why it isn't capping numbers at 110% )

I will doublecheck the spreadsheet when compiling the final results and if there are problems, then I'll download everyone's results and process the bonuses through an Excel spreadsheet (where I'm more confident of the results).

I downloaded the spreadsheets and double-checked all the formulae because in some cases the Google spreadsheets had totals that weren't capped at 110% (when that was corrected, it did make a difference to the overall rankings, so if your team has a different total to the one in the Google-sheet that is almost certainly the reason why).

Other reasons things are different from the standings along the way:

1. People often complete the spreadsheet as they go which can make their results look better depending on when the weekly results are calculated. For example, when the results for week 2 are calculated they also include some partial results for week 3.

2. A couple of people dropped out in the last week, but they hadn't yet been removed from the spreadsheet.

3. One or two people were "late" finding the spreadsheet.

4. I was late adding my own results but that's got to be an organiser's privilege, surely

Anyway, without further ado, congratulations to....

"Stuck in the Middle"
US Central team who are winners with 103.44%

US Central have led this challenge from the start and have a huge number of individuals who achieved 110% in at least one discipline -- they are deserved winners of this challenge.

The remaining places are:

2. International -- 99.64%
3. West -- 99.24%

So, members of the US Central team can proudly add to the their signature line "My team rule the world -- we won the May challenge"
