I've got my first sprint tri of the season coming up on Sunday (Pigman, anyone?) - and the forecast is for rain.  Since the weatherguys NEVER get it right, I'm not overly concerned, but am planning accordingly.  I have ridden my bike in the rain, and I have run in the rain, but I have never done an open water swim in the rain.  And unless there is lightning, this thing is going to happen, so I wonder if anyone has any experience with this - does it make any noticeable difference?

no, unless it is very windy where there might be a bit a waves, it is no big deal. If there is lighting they may delay the start a bit but other than that is it fine. I would rather swim in the rain, than bike or run. You are wet anyhow and the water may seem warmer

Yes, that was my initial concern.

Swimming in OW in the rain, are you CRAZY??? YOU COULD DROWN!!!

I can't say that I've ever really noticed a light rain whilst swimming in the ocean, but prior to this year my goal in OW was to dive under as many waves as humanly possible (beach) or not let my feet touch the bottom (lakes -- ick). I suspect, however, that it's not going to interfere with your breathing or anything, and goggles were made to be in the water. Have never swum in a huge thunderous downpour, but secretly I would really like to.

Have fun this Sunday!

Swimming in the rain is cool. Unless you've got wind stirring up some choppy waves, you shouldn't notice much difference.

I'm not a biologist, but the other thing to worry about is runoff. When it rains around here several beaches get closed and some people choose to not race due to bacteria levels. I figure all the crap I eat will kill any bacteria I take in during the swim.

God, it's so hard taking my posts seriously when I have to look at my butt in the left hand corner.

You had to pick RED jammers.

Madcow - I am now taking your posts VERY seriously - bless you.  As for the RED jammers - any chance of a front shot?  Just as an objective opinion as to whether or not you should REALLY be wearing them in public.  Just trying to help out.

Guess I won't concern myself with the possible rain swimming - doesn't sound like it will interfere with my breathing or anything - and thanks to all your helpful responses I now know that  a) I would have gotten wet anyway, and  b)goggles are made to get wet , so that has put my mind at ease.

Actually the Red jammers were in a swag bag for a race I did last year. I have never worn them outside and had to take the tag off for the picture. I chose them for the sock picture

because you can see more detail than the black tri shorts. So, I won't be wearing those out in public

The first time someone sent me that e-mail I laughed so hard I practically.....well, never mind.  I laughed pretty hard, is what I'm saying.  I wonder how those poor guys feel to be famous for that.  I guess some probably feel better about it than others, eh?

It's a COMPLIMENT, HappyCow!  Now if you want to keep away the REALLY scary ogglers, do not let MadCow wear those red jammers in public!  I don't need the guys in the bike pic, I have a husband at home myself who's in no danger from anyone in that photo (maybe I should buy him some red jammers, hey!).

Sure you don't want to keep them, for home use?

You have a 137m pool?  That is so awesome!  That's like running laps at the horse track

- 2005-06-02 12:18 PM we have a large outdoor pool where i live (137meters) and I try to make it there when it's raining. I love it, I think it feels neet on my back and arms. Then again I used to race small sail boats in sun, rain, or snow, so i guess i'm used to water from all directions.

My lucky tri shorts are red.  I won my age group in every race that I wore them in last season.  That will probably get broken this weekend because my long time rival is in the same race with me this weekend, and out of about 12 races against her, I've beaten her once.  Maybe I can make it #2.
