Total Time = 1h 42m 56s
Overall Rank = 119/128
Age Group = Athena
Age Group Rank = 4/6
Pre-race routine:

Woke up praying it wouldn't rain. Hooray! No rain! Didn't eat b/c I was still full from the night before and had a nervous tummy. Had some water and tried to relax. Drove to the race jamming out!
Event warmup:

No warm up. Just hung out out with my friends trying to stay calm about the swim. Met my friends and family and had a nice pre race chat.
Swim
  • 16m 19s
  • 600 yards
  • 02m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started in the first wave with Men under 35. I was one of the few Athenas doing the race. I thought I was ready but the water was SO salty it freaked me out. I put my face in and got that taste in my mouth and couldn't recover. Now that I think about it, it might have been good to get some salt before the Half Ironman ocean swim.

I think the swim course must have been a little short. My time should have been slower for as bad as I was swimming.

I had some problems sighting again but better then last year. I must have looked pretty crazy at some points b/c I had the lifeguard come up to me 3 times to make sure I was ok. Remember, it was only a 600m swim, so that is NOT good.

I survived but it wasn't pretty.
What would you do differently?:

More OWS practice. I don't know why I freak out so badly. I need to work on sighting and group starts.
Transition 1
  • 02m 50s
Comments:

I generally ok at transition. Not too slow and not too fast. I probably lost a minute by taking off the chip to get my wetsuit off. I did sit down to get my socks on and shoes on. over all, Pretty smooth though.
What would you do differently?:

Place my chip differently so that I didn't have to mess with it.
Bike
  • 44m 18s
  • 12 miles
  • 16.25 mile/hr
Comments:

I felt ok on the bike. I passed a few people and got passed by a lot of guys. Into the wind I was going about 15 mph and with the wind about 18 to 19 mph.
What would you do differently?:

I think it is time to go areo. I'm going to try it after CA70.3. I think I could have pushed harder but was worried about my run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

This transition was good. Sat down to put my shoes on but was up pretty quickly.
Run
  • 37m 32s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 11m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt like I was running slower than I should be but I was wiped out. Many thought the run was long. I hope so!
What would you do differently?:

I need to do some more bricks.
Post race
Warm down:

Chit chatted with family and friends. Not that hungry right away.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to lose weight and push myself harder. I think I really need to start using that Heart rate monitor better and pushing into my higher zones.

Event comments:

I think the race was ok. Not the best and not the worst I've ever been to. Better than I was expecting after reading about the water. It was salty but I thought it would be dirtier. I'd swim in it again now that I know what to expect.

Not impressed with the sign in at Landis. People seemed to be getting mixed messages from staff. I thought race day was ok.

Bummed that results came out so late. I didn't get them until the next day around noon.

I would compete again b/c it is good OWS practice early in the season.

I agree with the majority of your post. Real ocean water though salty is not as nasty as this. I have swum the Atlantic and Pacific in many places and none were quite like that water.

I don't know why they put Athena's with a guys' heat - the one race I did like that it really threw me off.

Well, other than pool swims, most of my swims have been in the Pacific Ocean and salt is what you find.  But not the rest of the gunk you had.

It looks to me like you had a terrific race.  I think you have nothing to be worried about.  I hope you are using these results to calm your nerves and focus on the next 2-1/2 weeks again.
