Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am looking for some family oriented things to do in Austin the Saturday before Cap Tex, any suggestions? I also need a place to get a run in, probably over an hour. I am only doing the "First Tri" and am training for an oly in July so a run on Sat or Sunday comes first over a good time on Monday unfortunately. |

New user![]() | ![]() Dude, as a Texas Ex, you're in for a great weekend - I love and miss Austin. Your run has to be around town lake - no better place to run in Austin. Dirt trails, beautiful, very friendly running community. Loops of up to 13 miles - you'll love it. You should take your family around the UT campus, it really is gorgeous. Call ahead and take em up the tower for some really breath-taking views. Barton Springs can be a ton of fun also, it is a natural spring perfect for family swimming and just hanigng out. Those are just a few ideas. Can you tell that I'm excited to get back to Austin for the tri - I'll be doing the sprint. |

We are both from up north and she is a big Ohio State fan. I am afraid what she might do on the campus if I take her there. I like the Barton Spring idea. My son is really starting to enjoy the water and I don't want to spend all day at the hotel pool. How cold is the water this time of year there? I would not mind swimming some to get OWS practice since I have only done it once. |

Largest urban bat population in the world I saw that online and was already planning on checking it out. It looks very interesting. My son might freak out (heck my wife might even freak out) but what the heck. |

I am a really bad judge of water temp as I have only swam in it one time, is 68 pretty cold for this time of year? Is that too cold for a little kid? I guess it really depends on how hot it is outside. Thanks for the suggestions. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You should try to get a meal in at Trudy's if you like mexican food. The central location just north of campus is the best one. Don't really know about anything else. I was a student there, and students really dont do too many family oriented things. And 68 degrees might be a bit on the chilly side. |

New user![]() | ![]() Trudy's is good - but it tends to be packed. Actually, all the restaraunts in Austin tend to be packed all the time. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Another really "Austin-y" place to go for food is Kerbey Lane, off of 38th Street. Oh...and Rudy's Barbecue - there's one on Hwy 360 just north of Mopac, and another one further north on Hwy 183 near Duval, I think. They serve food by the pound and you get it all in a big milk crate and butcher paper for plates. It's on the spicy side, but the brisket is fantastic. Another BBQ place that's awesome is County Line - a bit more expensive and nicer, and really great beef ribs. There are two in town - one off of Bee Caves and one on Hwy 2222. And sometime while you're here, you HAVE to have Amy's Ice Cream - they're all over town, but the one closest to downtown is at Lamar and 6th. Zilker Park is a fun family place - it's right there at Barton Springs, and yes 68 is COLD! You can rent canoes and go out on Town Lake. There's a playground and a train for the kids - depending on how old they are. Also, the Botanical gardens are right there and you can go see the dinosaur footprints and all the beautiful plants. You could also head down south to the Wildflower Center way south on Mopac wander around the gardens and take a trail hike. There is the Bob Bullock Texas State Museum which is fun - it's downtown. They have an IMAX theatre there as well. Since I live near Austin, and have been here for the last 15 years, I have tons of ideas. Let me know if you need more or if there's something specific you're looking for..... Edited by katzchen55 2007-05-19 4:31 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I suggest the Hula Hut on Lake Austin. Great food (actually it's the same food as Chuy's but a slightly different menu) and great atmosphere...it's right on the lake and you can eat on the deck over the lake. It's west of downtown on Lake Austin Blvd. Central Market is also great. They have a great cafe and an even greater playground off to the side. My kids LOVED it there. It's on N. Lamar just slightly north of downtown. Zilker Park is also good for the kids. They used to have a little train that ran around it, but not sure if they still have that or not. The Austin Children's Museum is downtown and is really fun too. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So many things to do here in Austin. All the other BT'ers had great suggestions. You can also check the Round Rock Express Baseball team in Round Rock. Cheap prices, cold beer, and baseball. Checking out the bats under Congress is always a must for visitors. Just keep your mouth closed when they fly over you. Kerby Lane is a great place to eat. Yummy food and great Austinish people there. And if you want to, go see the capital. Free tours great history. If you're going to do something that night, go to the Alamo Draft House and check out a movie. You can eat, drink, and watch a movie all at the same time. It's great!! And if you're at a local place, look for the Austin Chronicle. It's loaded with all the events going on for the weekend. You'll have a great time here!! |

The sunsets at Oasis are owned and operated by a Non-Austin Corporation. As a South Austin resident for the last 8 years, I'd suggest Kirby Lane, the one on S. Lamar is my favorite. Also, I'd suggest Baby A's (strongest margaritas you will ever have). As for Pasta, I take my kids to the Spaghetti Warehouse, it is downtown (warehouse district). They have a train caboose in the restaurant that the kids can sit in. Anyways, lots to do, many things. You might want to check out Whole Foods world headquarter's downtown on 6th and Lamar. That is something to behold |

People (myself included) are more than happy to embarass themselves at karaoke night after a couple of limit two margaritas. I'd recommend the purple one. |

That was my first exposure to Austin. The fact that I lost all thought process only occurred to me several hours later. |
