Thankfully, I don't have kids so don't have the issue of saving face. My wife always reminds me how lucky I was at Xmas. I was a little spoiled as a kid and basically got whatever I wanted. However, I don't have particularly good memories of Xmas growing up. I think the stress of the holidays always had my parents on edge and all I remember is a lot of head butting, especially between me and my mother. We never seemed to get along until I moved out!
I'm really trying to hold it all in this year. My wife's family has disowned us because we stepped in last year after her mom died and her dad went bat $hit crazy and married a psycotic, abusive, drug addict. I wish I was exagerating, but I'm not. Most everyone hates us now, or isn't allowed to talk to us. It does make it easier and cuts back on all the travel time for parties, but my wife is really upset about it. So me being my normal bah humbug self this year isn't going to help anything!
So....yeah........MikeD I feel ya man. You're not alone! Damn......I think, in your case, you can get a special dispensation to go ahead and cancel X-mas. Sorry for your troubles. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Christmas last year was a very sad time for our family. This was my year to have xmas off work but I am working xmas day for my coworker so he can be home with his (young) kids. I have told everyone that I'm not celebrating xmas this year. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Christmas is a stressful time for many, myself included. I grew up VERY poor and I knew it. I always tried to get away from christmas lists as I got older but my parents would insist on getting me things even though I asked them not too. knowing how much effort and trouble it caused them to dish out $50 for all my presents put a real damper on my celebrating. The best thing to me about Christmas, and what I do get in the mood for, is the dinners with family and friends and the Church services leading up to and on Christmas. My wife has a hard time understanding this and insists on going big on the decorations and presents. Lights all over, decorations all over inside the house. a tree upstairs and downstairs, buying those light up lawn ornaments etc. I can put up with and help with all of that though because she respects me when it comes to presents and never goes overboard on it. She also makes the effort to make sure we have the big family dinner and that we go to church. Last year was a bit messed up though - my sister in law went into labor early Christmas morning and gave birth to her twins on Christmas day. So this year we have a combined Christmas and Birthday celebration for them. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Christmas always creeps up on me....suddenly it's December I've done nothing and need to get busy! My daughter is seven, Christmas is about her. She loves it all, going to church with her dad, going to listen to Christmas Carols, buying and wrapping presents, visiting Santa at the mall, decorating the tree - all of it! This year is even more special, we'll spend Christmas day with family here in Australia then she and i will fly overnight to the UK to spend the rest of the holidays with her grandparents. She is very excited. She asked me the other day if Santa is real? i said it's up to you to believe what you want, but I still believe in him...if you don't believe then he can't be real. She believes. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I know how you feel. I think part of the problem is Christmas is no longer a special time of year. You start seeing Christmas decorations in stores in September, by the time December gets here you're over it already. Stores are opening on Thanksgiving evening now for the mad rush of shoppers. Christmas commercials bombard the TV. It's more of a turn-off now, than a joyful time. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The Lord (or whatever higher power you may believe in) certainly has a good sense of timing. While yesterday I was feeling all fed up with the spectre of the whole Christmas thing, today I received a reminder of what makes it so special. For many years, I've participated in a program through work for adopting a family where you provide anonymous gifts to a family in need. Today in my work mailbox arrived this years famliy profile/info. I've always made the shopping trip a famliy affair, and this year will be no different. Slipped my mind I'd even signed up. Going home tonight to put up some lights with the kids. ![]() |
