Thanks for the bump! I'm finally training in open water for the first time next weekend. I've raced in open water, but never trained. I've made a ton of improvement in the pool, and I'm nervous that it won't translate. I'll be thinking of your experiences.

Wow - that's very encouraging! Thanks for posting that!

Are the TI weekend workshops really 400 bucks? I think that was what the site said.

yes, they are $400. Whether it's worth it depends on you. I started with the TI book, but I had a hard time applying it in the pool. The DVD wasn't much better (again, for me). But when I went to the workshop and had 1 on 1 instruction, it came together.

I benefited from having the terms and general idea down (by watching the DVD), but I think even if you went in cold you'd be fine. I justified the cost this way: 10 more lessons from the guy who was helping me would have gotten me no where. The TI workshop ultimately got me swimming.

I went from being in the bottom 10% in my AG to being in the top 25% overall. So for me, it was worth it.

I can definitely see one on one instruction as being beneficial for me. I have been using the book and I seem to be improving doing the recommended drills, but it would be great to have someone observing and correcting me right away. Maybe after my first tri I'll be able to justify the cost.

Yeah, pretty steep. I actually went a different route and found a coach through the TI website and I start private lessons with him next week. $60 per lesson, but at least it will be spread out and I'm hoping (can anyone chime in here?) that 1 on 1 lessons will be even better than the clinic. I'm looking at doing 4-6 lessons with him.  I'll let you know how it turns out!

My "clinic" was one on one. So really I think it was the same as lessons would be with a TI coach. And my hunch is the workshops are probably as good as one on one as far as learning the TI methods specifically. The difference is I was only in the water for about 2 hours. Once I learned all of the buoyancy drills, I went home and practiced for a few weeks. I went back and learned the propulsion drills and put everything together.

TI has a role for people like me who had no swimming skills. But I didn't get faster until I found a traditional coach. I still need some work as far as speed goes, but I'm focusing more on the bike right now... Good luck.
