There is nothing like a cold beer after a long workout! John Walker the first miler to go under 3:50 used to consume a 6pack a day. Those New Zealanders know how to drink!

triboy_20 - 2009-10-06 3:13 PM so i constantly hear of people always drinking beer after a workout or after a race. Why is this? do people feel the need to treat themselves to something that tastes good (cause if so, why not just drink something that isn't going to have alcohol or dehydrate you?), or is it out of celebration that they decide that it's ok to have one? It seems like people look forward to having a beer after a workout. Why? In my opinion, it's a waste, something that has no value to me. I'm not bashing people who drink by any means, it just seems to be something a lot of athletes do.....i'm just curious. What's your opinion?

Just wanted to let you know I just finished about an 8 mile run. While on the run I saw an empty beer can and threw it away ran into a police officer that I see and talk to here on occasion and he got quite a kick out seeing me run with the beer can and asked if I knew about hashers. Well of course I do and we had a nice little conversation for a few minutes then I went on my way and thought about this thread, how good a beer does taste after a good run, even though I haven't hashed in a few years thought this would be a good time for a Brew and a Bagel, so here I sit, sipping a nice frosty cold Fat Tire at about 9am and getting ready to toast a bagle.

Cheers.

Oh, BTW Triboy_20 do you ever pick up trash when you are out running or enjoy the outdoors? I try to leave the area I visit, workout in a little cleaner than it was when I arrived, hope you do the same.

just to keep the education going, this is the most important thing i learned in college (well among a few other deep life facts).

Food has no beer value, but beer DOES have food value........

And the reason i drink beer,

A- I love it

B- I live in philly and have made it my mission to try everything this beer loving city has to offer.

The question isn't why DO we drink after racing, but why DON'T you? I've never been so happy to see a beer station at mile 24 1/2 during the Houston Marathon. It made the whole run suck a little less.

halman - 2009-10-06 8:08 PM Beer (alcohol) in moderation:
1) increases gastric acid secretion - aiding digestion
2) dilates the peripheral blood vessels- lowering blood pressure and also helping to cool the
      body
3) thins the blood- leads to better cardiovascular health
4) is associated with elevated HDL cholesterol levels
5) tastes great
I have just gone to the refrigerator and opened an ice cold "PBR" to sip on while I am typing. I love a cold beer after a workout or a long day at work.

PBR...Ugh. That does not make you a beer lover! LOL #5 Tastes great??? PBR?? NO THANK YOU! (but I do love beer!)

I am a self-professed beer snob.

In total defiance of my country's national pride, I'm a Canadian - and I DON'T like beer!

(not even going to hang my head in shame about that one)... however, I DO like vodka (mixed with almost anything... or nothing if it's good vodka), gin, tequila, whiskey, etc., etc., etc.  Why do I drink it?  Because I like it!
