I'm getting better about it, but in the past I was way scared that I would be eaten by Jaws.  I don't just mean any shark either, sure, I don't want to be eaten by ANY shark, but I used to be quite sure that the giant pretend shark was going to gobble me up.   It was so bad that for a long time I couldn't even be in a pool without another person in the water too.  Seeing as how I was worried about a pretend shark, it only made sense that it could even get me in the pool, or a pond, etc.

Changing fluorescent light bulbs.  I'm afraid one will explode and tear my hands to shreads.  Of course I'm responsible for changing them at work.

Can't stand hights either, but I have to climb grain bins for work.  I was watching a PBS show on the construction of a bridge at Alton Illinois and I couldn't stand it, they were so high up.

itsallrelative_Maine - 2010-11-02 11:22 AM Being buried alive. Gives me the willies just thinking about it. Oh, and ants. When I was growing up, our cabin was infested with carpenter ants and every time we would go, we would have to vacuum up 100s of dead carcasses...did you know that the really big ants crunch when you step on them? Blech!

A second for being buried alive.

Being afraid of this is far from irrational.
Getting involved in it in the first place, that's irrational.

I have a visceral dislike of centipedes, I HATE them. Everytime the bug-be-gone would wear off when we lived on Maui, and the creepies would end up writhing on the kitchen floor, I'd FLIP and have to call my husband to find the bug spray. EEE-YUK.  They got pretty big there, kitty tossed one around the garage that was at least 5 inches long.

One of the great house decorations I saw this Halloween was nothing but giant bugs & arachnids, with, yes, one 4 foot long rubber centipede twining 'round a porch post.  I had to poke it to make sure it wasn't real.  Centipedes, the only thing that has ever made me squeal like a girl (and I am female).

A combination of childhood fears never let go: I can't sleep without something covering my feet because I'm afraid the vampire that sleeps under my bed at night will grab them and drag me under my bed for dinner (or breakfast).

I don't believe in vampires and I know one doesn't sleep under my bed.  Hence the irrational.  NOt sure it's a fear as much as a quirk.
