Ok..so I LOVE my new race day wheels (Zipp 404's).  So what is the best way to be prepared to fix a blow out on a long distance race day?  I have been pointed to a pit stop product but is that better than just learning to replace the whole tire?  What do those who have had this issue before do?  Do you carry an extra tubular and if so where do you buy them cheap?

Here are my plans for a flat:

Short course (sprint/Oly):

* 1 can of Pitstop
* 1 CO2

Long course (HIM):

* 1 can Pitstop
* 2 CO2's
* Razor blade
* 1 spare

My plan in the event of a flat is to hit it with the Pitstop and hope for the best.  Depending on how well it has been sealed, I have the CO2 to add air if required.  In a short course race, if this doesn't work, I'm calling it a day.  In a long course race if the Pitstop doesn't work (or has no hope of working - i.e. sidewall tear) then I will grab the razor blade, cut the tire, rip it off and replace with the spare and go.

What he said ^^^ is what I do as well.

I sometimes forget to take pit stop out of my pocket after bike..need to get better with that...doesn't fit in my saddle bag with the spare tubular.

I bought an inexpensive tubular at Performance tire now I just use an old one that I no longer use. Be sure to prestretch the spare by putting it on a rim of any type.  Also if you need a valve extension get one and have it attached to spare so less fussing with stuff if you get a flat.

My preference would be to ride clinchers but I have Zipp 404s with power tap hub so I'm not changing any time soon.

Good advice above and exactly what I do. I always have a tiny razor blade electrical taped to the back of my seat post. If I need to change the tire, I'll just cut it in half, stick my finger inside the tube, and rip it off. Then just put a pre-stretched spare on without glue/tape and CO2 it. It should stick well enough to finish a tri at a good pace but I'd only take curves as fast as I'm willing to crash because there's no guarantee that the spare won't roll off the rim during a curve.

Do either of you pre-glue your spare tires?

My spare is an old tire that I used for a season (or two - don't remember) so it was pre-stretched and pre-glued.  I would definitely put a coat or two of glue on a spare after stretching it if you have never riden that tire before.

However, rather than purchasing a spare, check around with other athletes, bike shop, etc; you may be able to find one for free/cheap that someone had changed out and is willing to part with.

I don't. I've flatted a tubular before and the spare seemed attached well enough IMO to finish a tri as long as I'm careful on the curves.

I put one layer of glue on once a season.
