Setup Events
88F / 31C
Overcast
Total Time = 56m 15s
Overall Rank = 43/115
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 9/15
Pre-race routine:

Did my first triathlon before the second one (double sprint)
Event warmup:

A whole damn triathlon
Swim
  • 05m 22s
  • 250 yards
  • 02m 09s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim more or less identical to last year but a minute longer in gun time due to changing transition zones I think. Felt strong but did get passed some. Did beat 3 more people this time around in age group and then 15 more overall vs my first swim, so that means I was progressing better as things went on.
What would you do differently?:

Used chacos to run up and down from transition, which saved some time for sure. Just lose weight and swim more I guess.
Transition 1
  • 01m 13s
Comments:

This was actually 20 seconds faster than last year, so pretty happy with that.

10/15 AG and 44/115 overall, so a decent transition for me in general.
What would you do differently?:

Lose weight but robably nothing. Not comfortable yet with jumping on the bike or having shoes already clipped in.
Bike
  • 26m 14s
  • 8.1 miles
  • 18.53 mile/hr
Comments:

Gun time 26:41.

About 45 seconds slower than the first lap this year and about 55 seconds slower than the second lap last year.

First time I had a lap under 19mph according to Strava.

Felt strong still but must have really backed off hills. I did feel some fatigue coming in but no cramping. Still a solid bike for me given that I haven't been riding very fast.

1 place better this time around for AG and 13 places better overall, so gaining on competition as I went longer.

What would you do differently?:

Lose weight is really it
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

Really good transition for me into the run. 7/15 for AG and 39/115 overall.

I was 4 seconds slower this time around from 1st lap run to the bike and lost 4 places AG but gained 2 places overall.

Last year this transition was 1:13, so over 20 seconds faster compared to last year, which is really good I think.
What would you do differently?:

Not really anything at this point.
Run
  • 18m 45s
  • 2.1 miles
  • 08m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Gun time 18:49.

Only 1 second slower than first run, which is remarkably consistent.

About 55 seconds slower than second lap last year, which is about the same gap as my first this year to lat year.

Gained one spot in AG and dropped 1 spot overall, which is interesting given I was so consistent.
What would you do differently?:

Lose weight.
Post race
Warm down:

I didn't do anything. Just hugged my kids and was bent over for awhile. Needed to clean up quick to get out and get ice cream. I did just in the pool to rinse off and was going to swim a few laps, but they told me to get out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weight and training volumen, but mostly weight.

Event comments:

This year's version of this race was much bigger than 2023 but was still well-organized and pretty fast. There was a big party going on in a parking lot out the bike exit, but it gradually migrated over to where the run course was. The competition was pretty solid in general but did have a local feel. I will do it again since I really love the night race idea.
