Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hi Texas! My husband and I are going to San Antonio in March to visit his brother. I believe that there's a HIM distance race called the "Tall Texan Triathlon" at the end of March, but can't find any reviews of the race. It looks like it hasn't happened since 2006, but will happen in 2010. Can anyone tell me about the race? Any info. would be much appreciated.

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() There is a reason it has not happened since 2006: bad race organization. The year I did it, there was no water for the last several miles of the run. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I know a few people who did that race in 2005 or so. None of them said they would ever do it again. I'd give it a year and see if there have been any strides made toward improving the organizational issues they had. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I did the Small Texan (Oly) with the same group back in '06 and said I'd never go back. If go there expecting nothing you won't be disappointed. I kept the finisher's "medal" as a reminder. (A balsa wood star from Hobby Lobby, spray painted gold on 1 side and hung from a piece of yarn.) On the plus side: Boerne Lake was THE clearest water I've ever swum in. I could see other swimmers 5 feet away. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yikes. It doesn't sound like something that is a "must do" while we're up there. Unfortunately, my brother-in-law will be gone from San Antonio in late 2010. I'm off to look for another race to do while we're out there. Any suggestions? Thanks for the feedback! |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'll be the contrarian and say to do the race! For others in the San Antonio area check out www.seidelproductions.com (the aquarena tri is interesting for us because of the swim venue, though maybe not so interesting for Hawaiians!), www.alamotriseries.com, www.redemptionrp.com (the Enchanted Rock duathlon is a challenge!), and www.brittonbikes.com. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Aquarena is one of my favorite races because of the swimming venue. It's a very low key race and if you realize it is put together by a bunch of college kids, it is pretty well run. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() This was my first HIM and is one of the worst organized races that I have done. The bike had portions of unpaved road and a low water crossing that had water flowing, one bottle hand up of warm water and spotty run aid stations. The swim was nice and the run was very challenging (hilly.) I have heard that it has improved but do not know anyone personally that can confirm that. I would not recommend it unless you can confirm (from an independent source) that it has improved. I will second what someone earlier said about Aquarena Springs Tri. The swim is great (time-trial start), the bike is fun and the run is a mix of grass and sidewalk/pavement. It's pretty well run and a nice, small event. (I think it maxes around 400 entrants.) |

![]() | ![]() Does anyone know if it is the same person or organization putting it on? Or is it someone different? Thanks! |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's sponsored and promoted by the same bike shop www.brittonbikes.com, though I don't know if the actual race director is the same as in 2006. I wouldn't be surprised if it is the same race director since I think there is a family connection between the race director and bike shop, but I might be mistaken. Rightly or wrongly, I'm a lot more confident than others that this will be a good race. I've done other races sponsored by the same bike shop and run by the same race director and they've been fine. I didn't do the Small Texan this year, but expect to do DuBoerne in December. Nothing fancy, but the basics are there. They're typically fairly small races, as are all triathlons in the SA area. I expect this race will attract fewer than 100 entrants due to the distance, the early date, and for practical purposes is a first time race. Maybe a good number who are prepping for early season Ironmans. IM CdA seemed to get a lot of locals this year, including the owner of the bike shop. The big change, though, is simply tha the owner of the bike shop is taking triathlons much more seriously now (like in actually doing them and catering more to triathletes). I rode with a group from the shop earlier in the year, in part because they'd run after the Saturday ride. I'm convinced that they are simply more in tune with the needs of triathletes now and will put on a good race. Brian |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think a second chance for this event is in order. As Brian mentioned the organizer did IMCDA last year. While his shop is geared to high end roadies, his doing triathlons will have a huge impact on how he runs supports this series in the future IMO. He has added tri gear to his shop and will most likely be more in tune to the specific needs of triathletes. Seeing a big race (IMCDA) first hand will have shown him where he needs to focus to improve the quality of his own events. BTW, Brian he is doing IMFL2010 and went with a small contigent to volunteer last weekend and sign up..... at least he better be since he goaded me into signing up for it !!! |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm also a bit interested now. ![]() I don't need too much support, I'll just make sure I know the course before hand though. I'm more worried about going off course at poorly run events. Edited by smilford 2009-11-16 10:15 AM |

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() I did DuBoerne last year and wasn't impressed with the organization at all. The race started late and the run course was not well marked at all. At one point there was a pile up of the top 40-50 people early in the run at the edge of a creek because the route was not marked at all. I've not done the small texan tri, but I stear clear of most races/events put on by the shop and director because of past experiences. If it is well organized, it would definitely make for a challenging course with some great hills and good road conditions... |

I'll be at Lone Star, so just do that race. This way I can do that much better in my age group! BTW, I saw you on Legendary yesterday. About to get on the bike. |

Expert![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hey All, another San Antonian here. For those of you that did the 05-06 races this is the same bike shop but a different race director. I'd give it another shot. As stated before with them involved in tri's now, I believe that will impact their focus in addition to the fact that I'm going to send Jim this post and tell him to get on it! I like local races. However, Lonestar can't be beat so if you can do that race too! |

![]() | ![]() It has been interesting to read the comments on the forum regarding the tall texan tri... I sense mostly dissapointment in race management. Nick Siedel was the last race director to produce the tall texan and evidently he learned enough to start his "own" race production business. Now, the current race staff that will produce the Tall Texan Tri 2010, is a major step above having a college student put in part time hours between classes into the race management. The Tall Texan Tri 2010 is moved to March so that endurance distance triathletes will have a tough and safe event to kick off their IM season. That's correct, now that I completed the IM event myself, I do have a greater respect for the Tri needs. In the bike shop we have always maintained the top quality brands and have professional fitting, service, and power analysis that goes hand in hand with that product. As the bike sponsor and associate to the Tall Texan Tri, I have placed a higher emphasis on treating the event as a product and now recognize that a college student even in his deepest dreams can not be the race director. This race is here to stay. The 2010 race will be significantly matured! Hope to see you there!! -Jimmyb highspeed...lowdrag |

What I find interesting is that you place more emphasis on the short-comings of the previous race director and spent most of the post slagging him rather than talking about how the race will be improved. If you talked about how the race would be better, I would be more inclined to give it another shot. As it stands, you have not given me any reason to believe that the race will improve other than the fact that you say it will. Tell me how it will be better and I may have a reason to register. |
