This thread has my vote for best COJ thread EVER.

The fact an area might be voting to change manholes to personholes cracks me up.

Have any of you ever been in a manhole?  When I was a kid playing with my friends one summer we came across an extremely deep manhole.  We found a pry-bar and opened the manhole cover...it stunk!  A couple of us climbed down and saw some interesting things...it was a stream of everything that gets flushed down a toilet.  Fascinating stuff to a 10 year old.

Any other manhole stories out there?

Should of sniffed the manhole first.

Silly Teejaay, everyone knows you have to go in feet first.  By the time the smell hits you, your whole body's already in that manhole!

Side note.  I was watching some show (maybe Mythbusters) and they said a "manhole" cover is round because it's the only shape that can't fit through the opening and fall in...

I thought about it for a while, and they are wrong.  An equilateral triangle can't fit through the opening either.  So round is not the "only shape" as stated...  But that would make for and odd opening.

Incorrect. An equilateral triangle opening would allow for the cover to get thru. The distance from a vertex to the midpoint of the opposite side is less than the length of a side. Stand the cover up in that plane, and then rotate a little and it fits thru.Yes, I know I'm a geek.

Years ago ... ~2000? ... in Michigan... Lansing I think ... a guy steps on a manhole cover that wasn't seated properly. It flips up in the hole he goes down ... get your minds out of the gutter ... lands on the edge of manhole on his manbits.  Sues City of Lansing (I think). I know he sued some local government.  

So yeah, be careful standing or stepping on a manhole (cover).

I do my best to stay out of man holes. Just kind of instinctual when you're a heterosexual male.

What other people want to do with manholes is their business.  I'm not judging.
