Which do you think would be more important and more useful a group ride or a group run?

My local bike club and my local running club have there long run/ride on the same day. Which do you think would be more useful?

Yes the group rides are outside. .

Group ride.  Miles seem to go faster, conversations are easier, get used to a group running dynamic (which you will have sort of in most triathlons, especially an IM).

Just my opinion.

I'd do the run. The scenery on a long bike ride is better than on a long run, and you don't have as much of a draft on the run.

My long runs are meditative for me and I prefer them at my own pace.

Long rides can be tough in the Winter. I'd never to rarely get out for long Winter rides if I didn't have company. Unlike running, it's also a little easier for people of somewhat different abilities to get the workout they want (someone needing more of a workout can pull longer in front and push hard up the hills, for example).

From what I recall you saying your running club most folks aren't same pace as you, so why run with them?

Cycling with others of similar ability is wonderful. I tell my friends when I ride with them it is like a gift..doing something I love with friends nothing beats it. Of my miles I do less than 3% with others so each group ride is special.

I'm doing 50ish Sunday down on the Cape with friends..can't wait!

Go for which ever one you find it hardest to motivate yourself for.

Usually group activities like that can turn into a macho-contest. Doing that in a ride will push you without breaking you down so much. On a run...

I do not have many people do run with during the winter but I will again soon. Once it gets back up to 40 degrees regularly I will not have a problem with people to run with. I have hard time biking on the road alone though. I guess I find biking boring. Weird I know. . that is why I thought about the bike but casual bikers in the bike club might be too slow for me but they will bike 60 miles alot and that is what I need.

Group ride helps with your handling skills, communication and allows you to go faster than you would by yourself.  It allows your body to benefit from several things.

Group run, it's just about running with someone.  Granted, you can push yourself harder, but when you blow, you blow.  Group ride, you can sit in and hold on when you blow and still get some benefit.

Go with the group ride.

1) It's safer.

2) It will push you if you ride with people who are faster than you.

Oh, and I would suggest that you start riding... I'm already logging 100 miles a week for base building, with 60 miles of that being one long ride on Saturday.

I'm hoping my average on the bike at IMKY to be around 17/18 mph.

As for my marathon, I'm looking at walking... and keeping a 12 minute mile pace.
