Well, it was one thing tossing my mountain bike in the back of my SUV, but now that I am using someone elses practically new road bike(Kestrel Talon), I am considering getting a roof rack. I looked at the Yakima setups and they seem pretty versatile. Of course, anything that is 'versatile' doesn't seem to come cheap. I am just wondering who here has any experience with them(I am looking at the Boa or Viper system), or whether anyone could recommend something else. There are so many different setups to choose from as well. Your input is appreciated.

I also did a GOOGLE SEARCH and found THULE roof rack systems. These two seem to be the most compatible for my SUV model.

what are you driving? I've had a pickup, a minivan, a gas guzzling SUV, and now a little Honday CR-V. In the truck, I had to take the front wheel off to put it on the rack...PITA! On the minivan I had a receiver hitch so I got a rack that slid into it. Same thing on the SUV. I liked it so much I'm going to put a receiver on the Honda and use the same rack.

So, that being said, I've never used a roof rack. Why? Because of all the HORROR stories I have heard about people driving into their garage, or the ATM and wrecking not only the bike but the car as well. I am absolutely positive that I would do that very same thing if I had a bike on my roof. So how much does that Kestral retail for? Figure that into the cost of your rack system.

Just my 2 cents, but you asked for it! LOL

How odd that you would bring that up because the VERY thought occured to me as well. I can see something like that happening to me. I didn't even think about ATMs, or the like.

How securely do the bikes sit on the receiver hitch bike mount? It would seem that these would sway and bump each other if you had more than one bike on there.

they don't move at all. They are held by the top bar and then there are straps for the wheels. Mine is an old Hollywood, holds 4 bikes but getting 4 on is a bit tricky. You have to have the pedals, handlebars, and seats injust the right place for it to work. Definatley a job for "Gear Guy" (my husband). I'm pretty sure both Thule and Yakima make a rack similar to the one I have.

I have a Yakima roof system that I have had forever. Lets just say you get what you pay for. I use the Steelhead bike mounts that lock.. and one night, I had a guy climb ontop of my car and try to pull my bike out of the rack... and he could not get it out! so, it saved my bike to. the sucker dinted up my roof tho! I love my Yakima!. Jack
