Pre-race routine:

Up at 3:45 AM. Ate my bowl of oatmeal and hit the road for the 1.5 hr commute.
Event warmup:

Jogged a bit and tried to stretch a little.
Swim
  • 04m
  • 250 yards
  • 01m 36s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was a reverse triathlon, so the swim was last.

Got to the pool, dove in feet first, and took off. Felt surprisingly great! Nothing like the last reverse tri I did back in December, where the swim was miserable.

Just seriously felt like a torpedo, and literally passed 11 people just in that 250m. Extremely happy with how I swam.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 1
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Run to Bike.

Not an overly efficient transition. Missed my rack at first, helmet fell to other side of the rack, but otherwise got out of here ok.

Bigger issue was once I got to the mount line, I rushed getting my shoes clipped in and couldn't. Was worried I had packed the cleats with mud, but eventually got them in. Lost probably 15 seconds there.
What would you do differently?:

Need to considering leaving my shoes clipped in and just jumping on.
Bike
  • 34m 58s
  • 10.24 miles
  • 17.57 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike was a funky 3 loop, star pattern, but it worked well. The course was one where it was never flat. Non-stop ascending or descending, which I actually really liked. Was hilly enough to be able to drop quite a few of the rabbits that dusted me on the run, but not hilly enough for me to get clobbered too badly by the real cyclist.
What would you do differently?:

Pushed harder. As I would learn in the swim, I still had a lot of gas in the tank at the end of the bike.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Bike to swim.

Stripped down to tri shorts, grabbed my towel and goggles and took off.

Jogged to the pool from the transition, which unfortunately was downhill, on broken pavement. Was just praying I didn't slice my feet up or anything, but all was fine. Ditched the towel to the side, and dove in feet first.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 23m 30s
  • 3.21 miles
  • 07m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

Started with a mass start. Got towards the front, and fortunately stayed there most of the time. Tried hanging with these ridiculously fast UCSB college kids, and did so up until the very end.

Run splits:
1- 6:24
2- 7:51 (all uphill averaging 2.7* incline)
3- 7:18
.2- 2:23
Post race
Event comments:

Had a lot of fun. Great effort for a first event run by college kids. Will do this one again next year.

Biggest annoyance about this event, is that its now 2 days later, and the results still aren't posted. My pet peeve is events not posting results relatively quick.

Nice race, Chris, I'm definitely back next year for this one too. You were smoking on the run. I'm with you on the results not being posted.

Great job with the race and nice race report! I tried emailing the race director to see when to expect results but haven't heard back. Hopefully they post soon - I'm curious!
