Pre-race routine:

Woke up early at about 4:30. Took shower and ate some oatmeal and yogurt. My sister arrived and we went to pick up Ken and Dawn.
Event warmup:

After arriving at the Rodeo grounds, we decided to walk to the park rather than wait in the cold for the bus. Met up with some other ESCKTC peeps.

Jumped in line and off we went.

Comments:

I started the day just planning to run and not focus on time. I ran with Shelley and Dawn for the majority of the run. I started out wearing a jacket as it was cold outside and the prospects of warming were not good. At mile 4 I dropped it off at the "Purple ladies" aid station. This is a group of retirees who are at bottom of the biggest hill on the course. This is probably my favorite aid station of any race I have run.

I was feeling pretty good so, I just ran. I saw Chris at about mile 5 and yelled at him to at least cheer for us as we ran by. To his defense, he did'nt see me coming.

I ran this race last year and was very slow. I remember walking a lot. I have improved my fitness so much that I barely walk and have reduced my walking through aid stations. Now I just drink and go.

I ran up the Dutchman's Revenge and waited for Shelley and Dawn to walk up. I then decided that I had spent enough time waiting for them to keep up with me so I proceeded to start running ahead.

I may not be fast but I am improving and I love picking people off during the last 3 miles of a race. I am getting much better at running at a consistent race and managing my exertion levels. I noticed that I was on a 2:20 pace and really tried to pick it up the last few miles. I was also able to sprint to the finish once I made the final turn. I may not make up much time but I feel as if I am finishing strong.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was not an A race for me. I had no real expectations.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around a bit and met up with the others. Drank some water.

Event comments:

This is a great small town race in the open desert. They put on different races to appeal to all types of runners. They give out beautiful medals for 8k, 10k, half and full mary.

We did not stay for the post race food due to the line. The race provides breakfast burritos with the usual bagels, oranges and water.

Everyone really enjoyed the race and plan on making this an annual event.
