Does anyone have a tip on running shoes? Bought new ones, felt great yipee running along and fwacko! knee is out and tense and pinched nerve feeling, top of foot fwacko! aching, sore, crackling like broken bone but not, shins Fwacko!! not shin splints but felt like they were going to splice right open.

After five minutes of sloooooooooowwwwwwww walking, good to go- began running and yes, FWACKO!!! starts again in the order.

I waited again but this time the top of my foot was throbbing and my knee was tingling.

I am at a loss. Never hurts any other time. No problems until I begin running at a good pace- go figure.

Help. I stink at running but I need to run, but I cannot with this Fwacko! stuff.

I stretch after work outs. I am beginning very slow. I am at a loss- could just be my shoes? Or is there any other factor I am missing that would cause the above mentioned problem?

fwacko? never heard the joints do that before . . .

my wife currently is experiencing something like what you are talking about.  Her doctor told her it is probably tendonitis.  Top of the foot, going up to the knee . . . same type of stuff you are talking about.  She is taking large doses of advil three times a day (I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on TV, so don't consider this medical advice).

I had some trouble when I bought new shoes a few weeks ago.  I bought some Asics - they made my feet hurt after about 15 or 20 min - I think it was until the gel in the sole around the ball of the foot softened up.  It got better over time - I started wearing the shoes more for everyday stuff, not just exercising.  That seemed to help break them in a bit more.

You might have something more serious going on if you have a lot of pain.  Ice, elevation, rest, maybe some advil.  Sounds like you may be doing everything else right.

There's shoe information on the web site - Michael put a nice article out there this month, but new shoes won't help if you have already injured something.

Don't feel like I'm helping much, but I can commiserate.

Good luck with the fwacko - or better yet, stay away from it.

You could definitely have shoe trouble. I would recommend buying running shoes at running shoe store, unless you know exactly what you need/want. If you are in a town of any size, you can find a store that specializes in selling running shoes and apparel, and that is the place to go. The salespeople will be able to look at your foot (narrow? wide? high arches? low arches?) and recommend a shoe for you.

It would help if you have an old pair of running shoes to show them where on the sole they were worn out. And also if you know if your ankles are neutral, pronate (bends in) or supinate (bends out).

If it is tendinitis, it will go away after a few minutes of warming up the tendon. If it does not go away after a couple of minutes, it is something more serious. To counter it next time, you can ice the tendon for about 10 minutes or so after running. Just take paper cups and fill them with water and store them in the freezer. Tear the top of the cup off and hold it by the bottom and rub rub rub the offending tendon.

After I bought my new shoes, bought them before coming to this site and not getting the proper information I was experiencing pain in my shins, arches and achilles tendons. Not being able to afford to go buy new shoes again so quickly. I broke down and bought  some inserts at the drugstore. Took a day to break in but since then I have been pain free on my runs.

Are you striking up on your toes, or do you land heel first? When I tried running in college and got the worst tendonitis ever, I was trying to do long runs on the ball of my feet.

What type of insert did you get? I suffer from a nasty heel spur on my left foot. I do *NOT* want to get the injections to dissolve it as I understand they can be quite painful.

Doctor: "How long has this been bothering you?
Me: "Past year, maybe."
Doctor: looks at x-ray again "Are you sure?"
Me: "Just really started bothering me this past year."
Doctor: "This looks like it should have been bothering you for a number years."
Me: "Oh."

hehe.. i know FWACKO well from my 3 years as a paramedic in the ER! Heard many joints go FWACKO!! kinda makes you cringe a bit!! Hmmm is the arch in your shoe to tall for your foot?? that would put alot of preasure on the phalanges and cause things to be out of wack, thus Fwacko! Just an idea....and check where your landing on your feet. you might be landing to far on the balls of your feet.. that causes me to have pain in my shins. hope that helps... Jack

Sometimes it's just a trial and error thing. I've been running for years and I've tried most of the brands out there. Sauconys are the only shoe that doesn't mess up my knees. New Balance also seem really good for a lot of people, especially if your feet are a strange width, but they don't fit my feet right. Sauconys are particularly good for women because they have a narrower heel. I don't know: I put on a pair of Sauconys, they feel good, they keep on feeling good and I don't get injured. Nikes: instant pain, never really feel good. Adidas: break in a little bit after a while, but give me blisters even when broken in. Asics: something about stiffness or lack thereof, they make my gait funny and screw up my knees. You see where this is going. I'm sure you don't have to try every brand on the market, but you might at least try every shoe in the store and buy the one that really feels good. You could even try running with them the first few times on an indoor track so you can take them back if they're not for you.

Answer to all the helpers in one:
I run flat footed. I have a high arch but I over pronate, I believe that is what I was told. My foot rolls in and then flat. I have New Blance 905 and a pair of Saucony Aura's. It hurts in the begnning for the first ten or so minutes and then it evens up and gos away. Never thought about tendonitis because it affected my knee but you are giving me some things to look at. When I run today I'll watch and feel when and the how it hurts better. I am also going to run with a knee brace. Three months or so ago the Dr. thought I tore my menisicus. The pain subsided after not running, physical therapy, and meds but this pain is different. I'll watch it and see with the knee brace. Pray it is temporary, I have races to win... or not lose too bad in. Thankyou for the help and advice and I will take heed in them. I'll let you all know th eoutcome because I literally have to go run. Asta-

No FWACKO I hope.

Helpful suggestions ##2, 3 & 4 : Run in water. Lift weights focusing on strengthening the legs. Stretch even more than you run, especially afterward. You don't want that laser miniscus surgery. That is some spooky fun.

I am new to the board but here goes. I have been training for a couple of months with no problems then all of a sudden my left shin and knee began to hurt during my runs. I also started to experience a slight pain in my arch. A friend suggested that I get fitted by a professional fitter. I just happened to find a pediatrist that fits all types of shoes. He examined my bare feet and had me run on a treadmill with my old shoes. He then informed me that I have a very high arch and tend to run on the outside of my foot. He promptly brought out a pair of Mizuno running shoes best suited for my running style and I haven't had a problem since. Mizuno's may not be the shoe for you but this guy said that most people starting out in running injure themselves unneccesarily but not getting a proper fit. I highly suggest seeing someone to give you a good assessment of your running style and a good fit for your running shoes.
