Master 2288 Katy, TX (West of Houston) | Subject: Maybe why I DNF'd At IMAZ???? (long) I found this artical interesting, it sounds like exactly what happened to me in Arizonia. I highlighted in red some of the things that caught my attention: Dilutional hyponatremia For many years, the focus for hydration in endurance running/triathlon has been on drinking enough because of performance limitations caused by dehydration. First of all, dehydration is an easy state to reach. It is easy to become dehydrated in the heat because common sweat rates of 1 to 3 liters/hour are greater than the Edited by Freeswimmingfish 2008-04-24 1:27 PM |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Maybe why I DNF'd At IMAZ???? (long) Joe...thanks for sharing what you think happened to you. Interesting read....I hope you don't mind if I ask you a couple of questions.. hoping to learn from you... Do you think you over hydrated and were low on electrolytes? If not what? What was your hydration strategy and were you able to follow it? If you changed it how did you do so? Did you have a electrolyte replacement strategy and how did that go? For each of my long training rides/runs I keep track of my hydration, weight loss (or gain but that hasn't ever happened), and electrolytes that I consumed in order to learn what my body needs.

Hi Kathy, I do think I was over hydrated, not to sure about the electrolytes. I was up about 3 lbs at weigh in, didnt think much about it at the time. My hydration stratagy was to sip water when thirsty (every couple of mins or so), then to have a few swallows of gatoraide endurance about every 10 mins or so and a bottle of acceleraid after the special needs. Yes I followed it a little too well. The only thing that changed was that I was getting a swollen belly from the fluids and blocks, bars and sports beans I was eating through out the day. At around 2:00 I felt as if I could not take in anything else, my gut was so full, hard and swollen. I had not pee'd since about 1:00 and I knew that was bad, especialy with the amount of water, gatoride and acceleraid I was taking in. My leg cramped around 4:30, also a bad sign for me. After my contacts were blown from my eyes, my already bad vision turned white and cloudy in the right eye. Even though I drank several gallons of water the next day, it wasnt till Tuesday till I needed to pee again (yes, I didnt have to go from about 1:00pm on Sunday till around noon on Tuesday). When I did, it was crystal clear, no color at all. I am not saying that I had Dilutional Hyponatremia, but I do think it sounds very similar to what I went through on race day. Please learn from this if you can, avoid it if possible. It was not fun at all. |

Well, I pee'd 3 times during the swim, so cant tell you about that. The 2 times I peed after that, last time was around 1:00. It was in a porta can, so I didnt see it in a bolw, but it looked like it was "water with a squeeze of lemon", clear, but not tranparent....Seemed OK to me, then everything just shut off. No more pee, and everything I drank just kinda sat in my stomache, sloshed around, then just made me feel full.... Edited by Freeswimmingfish 2008-04-25 9:25 AM |

Veteran 349 Ironman Arizona via Surf City, USA | Subject: RE: Maybe why I DNF'd At IMAZ???? (long) Thanks for the insight.. I tried to plan ahead for Vineman 70.3 last year as it got to about 93 on the run.. I used "Endurolytes" made by Hammer to balance my electrolytes and used GU and some snacks and flat Coke from the aide stations.. I felt pretty good but that was only a 70.3.. The bike started to get warm, up to mid 80's i'd say, but have never experienced the heat for a long duration.. Thanks again for the heads-up.. We can all learn from a racer's experiences when they are shared in this manner... Lori |

Iron Donkey 38643 , Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Maybe why I DNF'd At IMAZ???? (long) Great stuff and thanks for sharing! At IM Moo last year ('07), I peed once or twice during the bike, and once or twice on the run. Consumed enough (more than I should) during the entire race. I did play it safe, but obviously need more evaluating and practice for next year. |
