Pre-race routine:

06:30am -- Ate peanut butter sandwich (Adam's pb on whole wheat x2)
09:30am -- Ate bag of cold, plain spaghetti noodles
10:15am -- Ate partial power bar
11:00am -- Race time
Event warmup:

5 minutes light jog. Just enough to raise heart rate, and warm up joints and muscles.
Swim
  • 12m 50s
  • 900 yards
  • 01m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

I consider myself a swimmer, so I was especially excited about this leg. I felt great during the first 200 yards, but soon my pace dwindled and I lost track of my laps. I had planned to finish the last 150 yards strong, but I waited too long. As I was getting ready to burn out the rest of the leg, the counter signalled my final lap. I was a hundred yards late! Anyway, I gave my last 50 everything I had and I felt great. Dizzy, when I stood up, but great.
What would you do differently?:

Keep better track of my laps, and go out a little slower.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

This triathlon is a bit unorthodox, as the order of the race is Run/Bike/Swim. I was not happy with my transition from run-to-bike because I was pooped from the run, and I wasn't very stable. I was borrowing a bike from a friend, so I had never been on it yet. It took me a minute to get used to it, stabilize, and get going.
What would you do differently?:

Get familiar with the bike instead of 'winging' it.
Bike
  • 00m
  • 10 kms
  • 0.00 km/hr
What would you do differently?:

Make sure I'm familiar with a bike before using it for a race. The front brake was pinching on the tire, and wouldn't release. I had a hard time getting into the right gear toward the end of the race. I felt like I could finish the leg strong, but I couldn't get into the proper gear.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Run
  • 26m
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 12s  min/km
Comments:

I went out too fast, and tried to keep on the heels of the wrong guy. He was much faster than me in the long run. It seemed like a good pace at the time... anyway, I blew it by about 3k, and totally lost my pace.
What would you do differently?:

Train better. Figure out my own pace.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking about 10 minutes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Weather conditions; insufficient training

Event comments:

This was my first triathlon, and it was a great wake-up call. I know now that I am in dire need of in-depth, goal-specific training, which I am now finding on BT. Pink Cheeks is kind of the "kickoff" triathlon for the summer, and it was pretty low-key. I'm not much of a long-distance kind of guy, at least not yet, so this was a perfect event for me to start out on.

I didn't catch my exact times except for my swim, but I'll update the report when the results come through.

Course: The course was covered in slush from the morning's (and previous night's) surprise snowfall. I'm guessing there were about 5-6 inches of snow that melted into 3 inches or so of sloppy slush. The road was wet, but fine, and the potholes were easily maneuverable. The street followed the edge of a mountain, and there were some falling rocks that landed in the road, apparently during the race. The off-road portions were pretty bumpy from all the precipitation the past few days. Everyone was peppered with mud in the face from their own bikes, but I thought that was kinda funny.

Anybody know if there's a way to edit the actual race report?  I finally got my times, so I was hoping to plug it all in.

Either way, here they are...

Run (5K): 26:15

Bike (10K): 28.35

Swim (900yd): 12:50

        Total Time: 1:07:40

I placed 7th in my age group (20-39), and I placed 21st overall, out of 120.  My bike and run times could use some serious work, but I was happy with the swim.
