Subject: Brand New in Lexington Area

Hey all,

I'm am brand-new and am looking for any advice anyone may have as far as starting (training tips, etc). I have been an athlete all my life, but injuries sidelined me for a while and I'm ready to start getting back into something.

I recently started road biking and can do approx 30mi comfortably, have always enjoyed swimming and done it well.... running, not so much (my absolute weakest point).  I know part of it is physical with the knee injury, but even before my knee issues, I hated it; it's mental I know.  I have always had to run with sports and I've never found that "bliss" of just being out their running.  I need to do it, but I dread it and just do not look forward to any aspect of it other than being finished (mind you this is all currently, I may grow to love it as I get better).  Any suggestions to spice it up and make it not so tedious?

Looking forward to a new challenge!

Im in Louisville, but I know Lex has a great cycling group the Bluegrass Cycling Club http://www.bgcycling.org/ Group rides are a great way to get out an enjoy some company while you train, especially if you are new to the area.  As for swimming, I would check out the Wildcat Masters at the Lancaster Aquatic Center http://www.kylmsc.org/clubs/Wild/index.html

Hey man, I live in Georgetown about 20 min away from lexington. The best place to go to meet people etc, is the Wildcat masters swim team. Its located at the UK Johnson center. All of the local triathletes swim here, and there are alot of different paces so it will be easy to fit in. Shoot me an email if you need help finding the pool or bike routes etc.

I am in Lexington for the next month and am looking for some nice bike routes.  I'm here working with horses, so a ride along some nice horse farm lined country roads would be great.  Any suggestions?

Elly, felt bad no one had replied to you yet so thought I would.  I don't know Lexington very well, but visit a few times a year.  My wife's an equestrian (eventing) and you're right.  Riding by some of those farms would be stunning.  Just make sure you don't drift off the road.

If you can, make your way to the Kentuck Horse Park as well.  See Keeneland if you're into racing.  And I can't mention Lexington without mentioning the Red River Gorge area, if you're into hiking, photo ops (lots of natural bridges), etc.

Oh, and contact the clubs mentioned above for the best, safest routes.

Enjoy your time in the Bluegrass - it's a wonderful state.

Thanks for the info.  The Bluegrass cycling club does not have its routes mapped out.   Anyone have some routes they would suggest?  I'm looking for something with nice horse farm roads, about 30-50km in length.  Ideas?  Also, does the horse park have specific hours, or can I go running there anytime?

Elly and others,

I highly recommend looking at the bgcycling club calander here: http://www.bgcycling.net/index.php?option=com_events&Itemid=73

There are rides every evening mostly around horse farm routes like you are after that you can join, and there's several different skill levels. I typically attend this ride on Wednesday evening:

I won't be there tonight, but if you want to meet up there next week let me know, its a pretty fun group.
