StandsWithFist - 2008-06-09 6:18 PM Yeah, I feel bad for the Olympic hopefuls.  Have no idea what they would do about that.  But at least if they just cut the swim, then people like me who are flying in, who planned their whole family vacation around it, AND incidentally don't like to swim :-) , it still saves the day!  Haha!

waidaminute - you are from Arizona and you planned your family vacation in Des Moines Iowa?  that's pretty cool - just in honor of that I might consider a duathlon if I only had to run once and bike once - that's two, right?

seriously I hope either the weather cooperates or they work out an alternate plan so we can all enjoy

The decision should be coming down this wednesday. For the pros they would need to relocate, I heard Easter Lake was being considered.

I don't think they would relocate the age groupers, that would just likely become a duathlon, but who knows at this point. I guess we just have to keep our fingers crossed.

I'm not sure one way or another that it's even being considered to be changed to a du - we were sort of joking around -

I'm sure they are doing everything they can to keep the race in tact - does anyone have any real info?

I heard it yesterday from a good source (probably the same source that jhilsch mentioned earlier in this thread - we were at the same race) that they were in fact considering it.

that would really suck - I am sure that there are many that would be happy, but not me for one - due to a lot of circumstances this will likely be my one and only race this year

*sigh*

keeping my fingers crossed!

Haha! Yes. I grew up in Iowa...born and raised...so I wanted to come back home to do a race. My sister lives in Ankeny, so I will have some family around.  After the race we are driving to Chicago to take in the sights and the Taste of Chicago before flying back out of Chicago the following weekend.

And I have read about many a race that had the swim portion yanked due to the water being too cold, or too choppy or weather conditions no good, or PH levels not passing, etc....   We all just have to know that there is nothing we can do about Mother Nature, not matter how unfortunate it is, and know that the race officials will be doing EVERYTHING in their power to save the race.

OK - I went on a long ride tonight with a friend that works at Hy-Vee corporate.  They are currently planning a second route in contingency for the flooding (it's a real mess here, folks).  He says that Wednesday is the "first test" and the only decision we will hear on Wednesday is a negative one (that Gray's cannot be used).  There is one day of rain called for between now and Saturday (Thursday, I believe), but even if the waters recede, they still have a huge issue with the bacteria in the water.  We talked about other swimming venues - but truth be told, there are not a lot of bodies of water that are not affected by this flooding.  Easter Lake is very small, and the transition there would be a nightmare - and thy might have to do something about wave sizes (the race is booked solid).  Copper creek lake is available, but we got so much rain this weekend, that it might have issues as well.  If they use Copper Creek, they would have to chang the course imensely, and they would have to have two seperate transition areas (Copper Creek is on the far Eastern side of town, out by the fairgrounds) Copper Creek is also small, and would probably require two swimming laps (swim once, get out run back to the start and swim again).

This guys says that a Du is the worst case scenario, but is still a scenario.  I asked him if people would get their money back if it got changed to a Du and he just looked at me.  Sorry I don't have better news than that.

That being said - nobody in transition until morning of.  The last I heard, the bike set-up was by wave.  That obviouly may change if the location changes.

Wow.  That is crazy.  I really hope it goes on as a tri.  I really cant see myself driving all the way up there for a duathlon.   The whole point of the race for me was a tune up for my HIM in a month.  If i dont get to swim, there really isnt much of a point.   I hope they get this straightened out because i was looking forward to this race.

Bike check in is on Saturday from 2-8, other than that transition isn't open until sunday AM.
