Prior to this – couch potato, just stopped smoking, 2 broken toes at the beginning of the year.

So from no exercise (well one volleyball session a week) to the first week

Swimming – 3 sessions a week at about 300 yards
Bike 3 sessions at about 3.5 miles a time
Running - pah! 20 minute sessions – just over a mile each time

Over the last week –

Swimming – taken swim lessons – up to 550 yards and now focusing on technique and bringing the time down.
Biking – up to 12 miles in 35 mins. Generally found that 10 miles is fine
Running – well – walk 5 run 2 (read slow jog). Up to 35 mins and over 2 miles!

I’m actually finding days where I’m enjoying this now. Got a schedule sorted and I like the bike – just wish I could get outside and practice.

I have to remind myself that the target is to race in August – not earlier – plenty of time to build up and no reason to rush it. Therefore as a reward for the first month I have bought a CD walkman that can pack over 300 songs on one cd (I’ll have to be getting some trance music next!!) and I’m taking myself off to Montreal for the weekend!!

Thanks to the encouragement and help here – I’ve done gym work before but having a specific goal (paid for!!!) and the support and training programs from here means I can now track my progress – and fess up to you lot when I don’t do what I’m supposed to!!

Thanks.

Great job, Mike.  Keep after it and you'll do fine.

When I first got started, it was hard to control the enthusiasm - wanted to get better NOW, not work up to it.  I managed to keep that under control (pretty much) and I think that helped keep me off of the DL.  Also helps keep the life somewhat in balance.

What a GREAT job you are doing!!

I'm working at getting better, but think that having a structured plan would help. So, like you, I will start that soon -- and take my time to reach the goals (particularly in the running).

I agree that this site and the logs help to motivate and to keep us honest!!

Cheers folks – the hardest bit is juggling the schedule to fit it all in and making sure I don’t push it too hard now – get doing the distances with consistency! I have a steady 550 to 600 yards on the swim and am happy to hold it there and just build it slowly to 550 without breaks before increasing the distance. The bike I’m happy with at 35 minutes and the only changes I shall make here are moving the level of resistance up. The running is the hard one but now I know I can do 35 mins on a walk / run schedule then I can focus on working that into a 35 minute run.

That’ll all change when it warms up and I can get out though!!

Awesome progress. I know when I aimlessly exercised at the gym progress was hard to gauge and at times it didn't seem I was getting anywhere. A plan in hand and a goal to work toward made a great deal of difference. Have a great weekend, you earned it!
