Subject: Bike shoes.....

Was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on good Tri bike shoes. I have a pair of Diadora Chills for my mountain bike now and love them. But, I don’t thing they would be the best shoes for a tri because they take some time to get on with the laces then Velcro onto of that. So, any pointers would be appreciated! Thanks Jack

I have a lower end pair of Tri shoes by Lake. I think they are CX100. They have a single velcro strap and no laces. I would say unless you find a great deal somewhere or used shoes, that they are the cheapest. I think I got mine for around $40 on ebay. I have seen them in bike shops for around 80-90 I think. The ones I have aren't carbon fibre soles. So far they have been working well for me, but I am no experienced cyclest.

Is there enough support in you Mtn bike shoes to use them without the laces? They should work fine for starting out. If you are looking at shaving second of your transition, and ounces off you shoes, road or tri shoe will help. I have some Sidi, with two velcro straps. foot goes in smooth, and straps lock quick.

Thanks for the link! That is a great idea, taking out the laces would work, except my dog decided to eat my straps off my left shoe! Little punk! so, i am in the market for some new shoes. Will probably see what kind of deal i can get at my LBS when I buy my bike. MMMMMMMMM Toys! Jack

JaWaLav, if your dog only chewed off a strap from one shoe and the shoes are still in good shape, it might be worth your while to take the shoe to a shoe repair shop between now and the time you buy a new pair. The only things you need to look for in a shoe are, stiffness, tight fit, and have only one velcro strap for quick entry and exit.

I'm currently using an old pair of Diadora road shoes I got back in high school. Just haven't found a new comfortable pair in a size 14. Anyone have experience with the Sidi shoes? Do they run big, small, narrow, wide? I mention Sidi b/c they are the one company who carries larger sizes.

I love my Sidis. I am on my 3rd pair in the last 5 years. They work for me because they have the regular width plus they have a wider width as well. I don't know too many other shoes that have that extra option.

Umbach, my brother! I just bought a pair of size 49 Sidi shoes. Sidi makes up to a 51 or 52, I believe. For purposes of translation, I wear a 15 in my Nike running shoes... I would have bought Sidi's triathlon shoe, but it only comes in a 48.

Anyhoo, I have been very pleased with them to this point. Raced my first race without socks, and getting the shoes on was a snap. The only peculiarity about them was that the straps go to the inside, not the outside of the shoe. (I got the $109 model with two straps.) So, if you need to adjust while you are on the bike, it is a very tricky move. Still haven't got the guts to try it yet...

And yes, they come in normal and mega (wide). I got the normal.
