Boise, Idaho

Overcast
Total Time = 5h 22m 42s
Overall Rank = 288/
Age Group = M25/29
Age Group Rank = 32/
Pre-race routine:

Woke up, had some oatmeal and water, got ready and caught the shuttle to the race start.
Event warmup:

None really, they gave us just enough time to get in the water before our wave start
Swim
  • 37m 31s
  • 1931 meters
  • 01m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

This swim was tough, it was very choppy and most people were having issues with swallowing water. The first 200 meters was brutal, I thought I would have to drop out, I swallowed so much water I was choking really badly. Finally I got composed and had a really good second half of the swim. Ended up catching a few other waves by the end.
What would you do differently?:

Not much to do differently. It was a tough swim due to the chop.
Transition 1
  • 03m 39s
Comments:

Not bad, not good, I had a long run from the bike rack through transition which is why it seems so long.
What would you do differently?:

I still need to learn to have my shoes attached to the bike, that would save some time as running in bare feet is faster than running in bike shoes.
Bike
  • 2h 48m 52s
  • 90.12 kms
  • 32.02 km/hr
Comments:

Jumped on the bike and took off, I was looking forward to this course, and I smoked the first half of the bike in 1:16, and with the hills basically being over in the first half of the ride I thought I would easily have my best bike time ever. Not to be though, as the wind on the backside of the course turned the ride into a bit of a slog, and throughout the last 15 miles I was dealing with some cramping in my legs.
What would you do differently?:

Re-think my nutrition a bit. I almost nailed it, just need a couple tweaks to the plan though and I think I can avoid the legs cramping up next time.
Transition 2
  • 01m 18s
Comments:

Felt like a pretty smooth transition, no complaints.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster.
Run
  • 1h 51m 22s
  • 21.08 kms
  • 05m 17s  min/km
Comments:

Here's where the wheels fell off a bit, I kind of expected this though as my run training has been limited because of some IT band issues I was dealing with through April and May. The good news is that I felt pretty good, the bad news is I couldn't push hard at all in the last half of the race and that is where I lost a whack of time. The best part of the run though were the spectators and the aid stations. Just unbelievable support and it was very much appreciated. I think this was the loudest course I have been to yet. Unreal.
What would you do differently?:

Not getting injured prior to racing would have helped my run for sure. For what it was though, I am not overly dissapointed with it.
Post race
Warm down:

got some water, some food, then went back to my hotel room and stretched out my legs and reflected on the day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of consistent run training, if this race had been at the start of April before my injury it would have been a different story(although I can't imagine swimming in that water in April)

Event comments:

Boise really put on a good show and I look forward to getting back there next year for another shot at this one.

Nice job, really solid times in all 3 considering some of the conditions race day. Definitely nothing to be disappointed about!

Mike - it's not what you hoped for, but it was still a very decent showing. Considering you swallowed half the lake and faced some funky winds on the bike, you did pretty damn well. And well, your run training wasn't 100% over the last few months yet you still pulled out a good pace for a HIM.

Now you know the course and you'll kick arse next year.
