Rapperswil-Jona , Zurich
Switzerland
25C / 77F
Sunny
Total Time = 5h 15m 48s
Overall Rank = 465/1228
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 100/229
Pre-race routine:

I was very thrilled waiting the start. I was worried of the water temperature, if using neoprene cap or not. Asking to everybody final suggestions, looking all around, walking to check everything...I could not stand still for relaxing.
Incredbile atmosphere, not comparable with my first marathon!
Event warmup:

Just 15minutes light running around the transition area. Then few mins swimming before the race start in a very cold water but better than I imagined.
Swim
  • 37m 34s
  • 1900 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

I started on the right side, far behind to avoid "sharks" catching me. First few hundreds meters were a nightmare but I could follow nice free corridors, avoinding stop swimming to bump into other swimmers. Great tournaround buoy path and finished relaxed with 141bpm average.

The time includes another 200 meters running and my watch indicated 36'11" just outside the water. I was aiming for 35' so I was happy with that.

My first experience in OWS at all!
What would you do differently?:

Push some more in the last 500meters.
Transition 1
  • 02m 31s
Comments:

Even if I used Bodyglide pretty much, I have several problems removing the wetsuits on the ankles and I had to lie down on the carpet in front of my bike to get it off!
What would you do differently?:

Use more BodyGlide!
Bike
  • 2h 54m 16s
  • 90 kms
  • 30.99 km/hr
Comments:

I am not a cyclist and I was aiming for 3h10 even because I tried the bike course a couple of time in the training and it seemed to me very very though! After the first lap I was amazed of the 1h25' on my watch! My legs were fresh and I started the second lap trying not to push hard to save myself for the run, my preferred part.
Witch hill was terrible the second time and I fully used my triple in front to go up with high rpm and I was able to pass people using this cadence since they were using harder gears...
Perfect weather conditions and I finished in 1h29' my second lap trying to relax my legs on the last 10km.
What would you do differently?:

Push more on the second loop.
Train more on uphills if I want to make this race again.
Transition 2
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

Unfortunately, getting in the T2, I did a bad mistake, unlocking my helmet while running to the rack. A referee stopped me for 20seconds and released me!

I had a huge back pain just coming off the bike.
What would you do differently?:

More strength training for the back
Be more careful to basic rules.
Run
  • 1h 39m 17s
  • 21.1 kms
  • 04m 43s  min/km
Comments:

I was expecting me below 1h30 for sure but the backpain killed my pace from beginning and it got worse km after km.
I remember it as a nightmare.
I think I did not drink enough on the bike because I was always thirsty and I did not miss any aid station. I drunk a lot during the run.
First lap still good but from the 12th km I could not resist to push with the back pain.
Post race
Warm down:

Just searching for my mum and walked away since my feeling was not so good after the 1h39 half marathon

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Strong back pain

Event comments:

This is an amazing event, well organized and superb people around.
If you want to attend, be aware of the though bike course. Prepare you 12-27 rear cassette...
