Subject: Florida Challenge HIM Course Ride - July 5th

Some of the folks from Tampa are going out to Clermont on Saturday, July 5th to ride the Florida Challenge HIM bike course.  We wanted to put this out as an invite to anyone that wanted to come riding for the holiday weekend.

A couple of us are going to do 2 loops (112 miles) but expect that most will drop off after one loop.

We're going to target a 7am start time and expect a pace somewhere between 16mph and 18mph.

Don't know where we are going to start yet, since I've never been out there.  So, if anyone has a suggestion of a good starting point, speak up.

Post your interest here so we can get a feel for how many people to look for on the 5th.

Hey, I am in dude, GREAT IDEA! :-)

Let's start at the beginning...

Where:

Clermont Waterfront Park, Clermont, Florida. Clermont is centrally located just 22 miles west of Orlando at the junction of US 27 and SR 50. Major Orlando tourist attractions are only 30 minutes away and the ocean beaches are just an hour away. Orlando International Airport is 40 minutes southeast of Clermont.

Bike Course: A 56 mile course consisting of one 56 mile loop along rural country roads. No major elevation changes, but the first 40 miles has numerous rolling hills and a steep but short climb up Sugarloaf Mountain. You will also experience a few rolling hills as you return to Clermont after mile 45.

I have a map and turn by turn, but not sure how I found them. If anybody is familiar with Clermont Waterfront Park and can help us designate a "Meeting Place", that would be really nice.

I plan on getting there around 6:30 in order to be set up and ready to roll by 7am. Gonna get hot, quick and my plan is 112 miles!

I have the course in my Garmin, so we wouldn't have to worry about a map, once we start.

I would also hope that the course is marked on the road.

That works! Figure we will be out on loop 1 at least 2 3/4 - 3 1/2 hours. We will start at 7, figure be there waiting for us around 930-10ish...1030... (I may be way overestimating our speed) Again, not sure exactly where in the park we will be. I drive a brown(ish) 2009 Nissan Murano with a bike rack on the roof and a 70.3 sticker on the back, so just find that. We will need company on loop 2... So if anybody wants to go that route, feel free!

The waterfront park's not huge.  There's a restroom and pavilion near the water where you can meet.  I might float that date around here (Jacksonville) and see if we can get a group interested in coming down.  I've done the course a bunch of times; of course, Fred's changed it slightly because of construction each year the last few years.

Man I wish I could join you.

But I am no where near the shape needed for Clermont hills.

We did a couple of Clermont rides through the TNO board (trinewbies) in the past.

It is so much fun to put faces to people's names.

Have fun and maybe I'll come out next time one of these rolls around.

pace? I am good for 16-18 MPH at that distance but not any faster. I would be down for the 112 at that pace.

do you have a pace in mind?

Todd

p.s. last year the 140.6 didn't hit the hill series (buck, hospital, etc) twice. it wasn't two loops.

16-18mph is our expected pace.

We wanted to do the 56mi course twice b/c we figured more people would join if they could do one loop, plus we can stop back at the cars to replenish fluids or anything that you may want to test in your Special Needs bag.

Looks like we are getting a pretty good group. Probably end up with 2 groups, but that s OK. We will all take off together and chat a bit, and see what happens with pace. At this rate there will be plenty of people that nobody will end up riding alone. Look forward to meeting everybody.

Hey I'll try to tag along! My family will be in NY then and if work is not a killer that week I'll take the trip over. I'm planning on doing the 'Assault on Sugarloaf' ride in Sept and even though I will not be in shape for decent course ride just yet, I should be able to do it with enough breaks thrown in here and there.

BTW, here's the 2007 FC bike course on BT route tracker.

Thanks for the map. I love 2 things about it. 1) it says it is 58+ miles, why are 1/2 iron distance courses never 56 miles?? (IMFL70.3 was almost 57.5) 2) Sugarloaf Mountain??? Come on. Now, I have never seen it, but I have heard it is steep and long, but... Mountain... No. if it doesn't rise over 1000 feet, it is not a mountain, just a real big PITA of a hill... According to the elevation chart, it is a 200 foot vertical climb. I am HOPING it helps prepare me to climb Whiteface Mountain, 1800 feet vertical (2 X's), which, IS a Mountain... I cannot wait to ride this beast, twice... Gonna be a fun day getting my kicked by a hill, should crush any confidence I have going into IMLP :-)

Hey it's FL and that's a MOUNTAIN!

Are you doing IMLP? I'm planning on being there to watch. My family will be in NY and I'm leaving the 9th or 10th (driving) and spending 3 weeks up there at our cottage on Lake Ontario.

The site I got the FC course directions off of said it was 58 miles and it lined up with what BT tracker said so I was happy it didn't lie. If you include the GF IM West loop the total distance for the IM is 111.8  (tracker 58.15 + 53.65), pretty damn close!

I found the assoult! http://www.active.com/page/Event_Details.htm?event_id=1544590&asset...

oh, and is it a mountain!!! hahahahahah Gremlin is in for a ride! hahahaha yes, and there ae more than one of them.

Peddle standing love affairs they are in deed!

Photobucket

no that is not a wall, it is a stright up the hill bump in the road! LOL!! they are short and sooo cool. Almost harder to walk up than ride.

but, I am from Idaho originally and it is nto a mountain. But, on the other hand, taking a bike up it, it harder than any other thing I have taken a bike up.
