Comments: There was this 16-year old girl pushing me the whole way! I beat her by about five seconds and managed to finish first in my heat for the swim event (believe me, there was only one way to go from there). What would you do differently?: I would warm-up! Also, I think I can do a better job at pacing. You see, swimming is all I know and I really tired myself out when I sprinted to the finish. ![]() Transition 1
Comments: What a mess! I've read countless race reports where people wrote about "zoning out" after the swim. I figured that since I have a history with swimming, that wouldn't apply to me. Wrong! I was a little tired and I was a bit out of breath when I got to T1. I had all of my stuff laid out in the order I would need it, but nothing really made any sense at all when I was there to put stuff on. I think I just lost my ability to problem-solve or something. Also, I went from zero-to-insanely frustrated in about .3 seconds. "What the hell is wrong with these damn socks!!!" I shouted, forgetting to dry my feet before slipping them on. What would you do differently?: Practice! ![]() Bike
Comments: I got a little cocky after the swim and I pushed the bike pretty hard. Although I was first out of the pool in my heat, I was second to get on the bike. There was this dude in a tri-suit that simply threw on his race belt and slipped-on his sneakers w/out socks and jumped on the bike. It kind of made me frustrated since I beat everyone out of the dang water. The whole heat was on the bike within a minute of me and we all finished at about the same time. What would you do differently?: Pace myself. I biked hard because I didn't know any better. I should have hydrated more on the bike - big mistake there. ![]() Transition 2
Comments: Ran from bike to track, not much of a transition. What would you do differently?: STRETCH! The volunteers were yelling and I got cought up in all the excitement. I jumped off the bike and started "running." ![]() Run
Comments: Dang... this was horrible! I've done a few BRICK workouts in preparation for this, but I was definitely not prepared! When I started running, I felt like my legs were two big cramps. First my calfs, then the quads, then the gluts. It was horrible I tell you! My wife was sitting beside the track and I mumbled something like "I feel like I'm 400 lbs." She said, "You're hungry for what??" After about five of the thirty-six laps, I started to feel normal again. By then, I was lapped repeatedly by everyone in my heat. Yes, even the 16-year old girl. I think my first mile was easily over ten minutes. After that, I think I settled-in a bit. The only problem was that I really didn't know how to pace (common theme). As I think back on it, I think I should have just done some quick math and determined that 36/3=12, so there are 12 laps in a mile. Yeah, that probably would have helped the pacing problems. I was just so friggin' beat! Dang, this was definitely my weekness and I know what to work on next time. What would you do differently?: Run more in my training. I need to get under 8 minute miles at some point - that's the goal. ![]() Post race
Warm down: Big hugs to the other newbie in the family and some stretching. What limited your ability to perform faster: Inexperience. I think my attempt to race the other people in my heat hurt me in the long run. I need to work on running form and stamina. Oh, and more of the dreaded "Brick" workouts. Event comments: Great volunteers! I think a chip system would really spruce it up, but beyond that, it was a great indoor tri! Last updated: 2005-01-03 12:00 AM

The wife and I loaded up early Saturday and drove from Oklahoma City to Tulsa. Once we arrived, we found the registration table and got out goody bags - "Dang, it's a long-sleeve shirt!" Since we were a bit early for my wife's heat (my heat was 1hr 45min later), we decided to watch the swimmers do their thing. "Dang," I thought, "they have the people sharing lanes!" I'm so naive... I'm pretty sure that every pool-swim in virtually every tri out there has things such as this. At any rate, we watched, we hydrated with water and gatorade, and we at clif bars and peanut butter sandwiches (aka PBS). My wife had her last PBS about 30 minutes before she was to start the swim... proved to be a bad idea. I watched my wife compete and I have to say that I've never been more proud and/or inspired. She was awsome! When she came accross the finish line, I had only fifteen minutes until my heat started. "Dang! So much for a warm-up!"
Not much of a warm-up. I cracked a few jokes with my lap counter and I did my stretch routine, but nothing more. Some of the other swimmer were doing some warm-up laps, but I just didn't feel it. To me, the first two or three laps are the warm-ups! Oh, the dude that was scheduled to be next to me didn't show up! I got my own lane!
