Pre-race routine:

This was my first triathlon. I went to bed around ten the night before. I woke up about once an hour thinking that I might have overslept. I ended up getting up at 4 and leaving the house by 5. I arrived at the lake by around 6:30 to give me plenty of time to set up. Got to see the swim course and think to myself "OMG that is a LONG swim!".
Event warmup:

I didn't warm up. I swam a short out and back and thought WOW this wetsuit is awesome. I am going to actually swim pretty good!

The race was set up for split times but I don't see any on the results so I am fairly disappointed.
What would you do differently?:

I would just relax, slow down, and swim my own race rather than letting everything get to me. I know I can freestyle that far. Looking back its kind of funny. I never thought I would freak out like that. I am going to make a few trips over to Helena and swim in the lake where my next tri is before that race and put in a lot of extra time to improve it and my confidence in it.
Transition 1
  • 00m

I was so disappointed by my swim that I pretty much just walked out of the water and to my rack. I just took my time and wiped all the grass off my feet and made sure I had everything ready to do. I grabbed a drink of water and headed out.
What would you do differently?:

I think going slower allowed me to calm myself down and relax after the horrible swim. In my next race I will run to my bike and try to go as fast as I can through this transition though because there were a good five people who were less than a minute ahead of me and I could of made up that time here.

The day before the triathlon I drove the course and the bike segment had me worried. I had just gotten my bike a week before and because of the weather only ridden it once. So This was going to be my second time on a bike, other than in spin class, since I was in grade school. The fact that it was downhill for the first half and I obviously am not used to my clipless pedals added to my apprehension. However once I got onto my bike all that went out the window and I just wanted to catch everyone in front of me. Only one person passed me the whole time I was on the bike and I passed quite a few people, especially on the hills on the way back to the lake.
What would you do differently?:

I was extremely happy with my ride. I wish I could have clipped in faster because that took a while. Other than that though I think I did everything pretty well and shifted correctly to handle the hills. I could have maybe pushed a higher gear for some of the ride.
Transition 2
  • 00m

This time I was really fast through transition. I just took off my cycling shoes, put on my running shoes, grabbed a drink of water, and took off.
What would you do differently?:

  • 19m 36s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 18s  min/mile

My legs felt pretty good at the beginning. The couple of small hills towards the beginning slowed me down a lot. The first half of the run felt extremely slow but I did better as it went on. I didn't get passed once and continued to pass a few people. I almost caught the girl who passed me on the bike. She ended up finishing a couple seconds(10 minutes and a couple seconds)ahead of me.
What would you do differently?:

I would push myself a little harder because I felt like I still had some gas in the tank.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed a recovery drink, banana, and bagel while standing around the finish line relaxing and talking to another competitor.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The SWIM. Nerves, inexperience, there's a lot of room for improvement.

Event comments:

This was my first triathlon and although some things went wrong I am pretty happy with it. I learned a lot and I am really looking forward to my next race and redeeming myself on the swim ;)

Course: This was my first time swimming in open water, first time in a wet suit, and my first triathlon. I know I am not the best swimmer so this all added up to be trouble. About halfway to the first buoy I was in the middle group with people all around me and I just freaked out. I had someones feet in my face, I couldn't see, all the people around me were making it harder to breathe...I just lost it. I was thinking I am not even to the first buoy and I still have a long ways to go , this race is over an hour long, what am I doing out here? I seriously almost headed back to shore. I flipped on to my back and decided to back stroke. Everytime I flipped back over to freestyle I would start to feel almost like I was going to puke. So needless to say I was probably one of the last five guys out of the water. The top women who started 10 minutes behind the men were coming out of the water right after me.

They posted splits today so this is for the swim and bike combined. I would estimate the swim and T1 were probably close to 25:00. I was so slow and the bike and T2 would be close to 36:00.
Course: The first half was pretty much all downhill. The course itself was through a scenic part of the valley.

I was the fifth fastest runner which makes me really happy. I was also the fastest in my age group, which included the fourth place finisher.
