Excelsior, Minnesota
United States
Total Time = 7h 30m
Overall Rank = 103/400
Age Group = Clysd
Age Group Rank = 6/19
Pre-race routine:

This one is near my house so, wake up is only 30 minutes before Transition opens!!! Had everything packed, so into car, ate my bagel and peanut butter, some Infinit and headed to the race site. Checked out the swim landing as it was supposed to be pretty rocky, swim start, transition area, then back to my car and rested...
Event warmup:

Ran about 1/2 a mile... swam around 200 yds.
Swim
  • 13m 6s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

This one was a bit rough at the start. Lots of bumping and after the 1st bouy, I found myself "drifting" from the front pack... they all seemed to be headed off course? I sighted, saw the bouy, but there were only about 5 of us heading in that direction. The rest were heading to what looked like the 3rd. Bouy... turns out they were. The 2nd bouy was right in the sun and with the Mirrored lenses, I was able to sight was many others couldn't. They were redirected by one of the boats, but by that time, it was an easy 150+ yards. Some chose to keep going and didn't make the trip back. There were no DQ's which was disappointing as there were some really "fast" swim times.
What would you do differently?:

Relax a bit in the beginning. I am happy with my start, but I am too tense.
Transition 1
  • 02m 27s
Comments:

Still a bit slow here... I was standing there, ready to go and something felt wrong... quick check, shoes, helmet, glasses, suit off... Ready... but that was another 10 seconds or so... should have been sub 2:00 easy!
What would you do differently?:

I need to Practice T1 more!
Bike
  • 43m 34s
  • 15 miles
  • 20.66 mile/hr
Comments:

I was strong on the flats and downhills, but no-where near my normal strength on climbs... hoping next week works out a bit better!
What would you do differently?:

Wasn't mentally into the bike until after the turn around. Need to make the switch quicker
Transition 2
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

This one was ok, but still should have easily been less than 1 minute.
What would you do differently?:

push through a bit quicker and get that last drink on the bike before I get to transition.
Run
  • 25m 16s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

This was a reasonable run for me. My foot is still hurting where the peroneal tendon attaches on the outside of the foot. Good pace for me for a 3 mile run, could have put a bit more into it!
What would you do differently?:

Still need to work on my running. My training plans pick up a bit on the run side, but I still really struggle. However, seeing as though I could barely walk on Weds. I am thrilled with the result.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked and got some water... Stretching and found some shade. It wasn't overly hot, but the shade felt good.

Event comments:

Great venue and close to home... not much more to ask for.

Nice work. I agree that with the sun, swim sighting was especially tough. I have a couple ideas for how they can fix that angles on that swim. I know the RD and might pass them along to him.

How does the bike pace you think you got compare with the online race results? Does it seem off?

Great overall race with your foot problem.

Nice swim with the sun. I know the event organizers pretty well and we talked for quite awhile after the race about the sun. Ross said he was going to change it next year.
