Tinley Park, Illinois

78F / 26C
Total Time = 1h 01m 43s
Overall Rank = 50/360
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 8/44
Pre-race routine:

Awake//12oz of Water-Try bathroom//Load bike & equipment//Go to bathroom
Event warmup:

None. Light stretching
  • 12m 41s
  • 2 miles
  • 06m 20s  min/mile

Did not take water at 1 mile turn-around
What would you do differently?:

Training harder bricks may increase confidence to go harder on 1st leg
Transition 1
  • 01m 13s

This time shoes were NOT on pedals. Got into shoes in transition area and trotted to mount line.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Short distance to mount line behooves having shoes on already instead of clipped on pedals
  • 32m 10s
  • 11 miles
  • 20.52 mile/hr

A lot better mph (20 vs 18mph) than my Batavia Tri. Not sure if I was more in shape, or energy level was better, or because of the shorter distance (11 vs 14.7miles).
What would you do differently?:

Must have bike tuned correctly. Again, I couldn't use the last two rings on rear cassette b/c front derailleur cage would rub on chain.
Transition 2
  • 01m 4s

Yeah, I didn't forget my race belt n bib! I put on in T1 this time. Got in and out very quickly...need to do this in Tri's
What would you do differently?:

  • 14m 37s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 19s  min/mile

Exiting T2 I noticed cramping in both calves (same problem as in Tri). I took a pkt of GU to compensate and seemed to work after 2-3 minutes. Pace slowed down by more than 1 minute/mile. Trouble 10th of a mile into run: Right foot got snagged on excess Yankz from left shoe and I tripped. Had to do a Tuck-n-Roll as I fell to avoid going Splat! Got right up out of roll and didn't miss a beat/step. "Congrats" from the guys behind me for well executed fall.
What would you do differently?:

Don't Fall Down...cut or tuck in excess laces from Yankz. Fuel better during end of Bike or in T2
Post race
Warm down:

None. Cheered at finish line rehydrated with plenty of post race Gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Shoelace incident, insuffecient training/brick workouts
