Boulder, Colorado

5430 Sports Corp.
90F / 32C
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 42m 57s
Overall Rank = 1192/1292
Age Group = F30-34
Age Group Rank = 90/100
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:00, did a full body spray-down of SPF 50, had a banana and toast with peanut butter and two diet cokes
Event warmup:

Stretched, swam a bit to check that goggles were ok
Swim
  • 36m 38s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

I swam freestyle 95% of the time, which is good for me. I need to figure out why I am so slow, though. I finally have the breathing down, but I think maybe I don't swim with much power. But I was very happy with this swim. Now that I can breathe, I've been focusing on sighting and being ok with being around other people. I actually started in the middle of the pack and was ok with it.
What would you do differently?:

More time in the pool in preparation; swim coaching
Transition 1
  • 02m 17s
Comments:

Not bad for me!
What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing transitions, particularly getting wetsuit off legs in one good tug like the pros do.
Bike
  • 1h 46m 29s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 14.71 mile/hr
Comments:

Old Stage kicked my butt, as expected. I walked it, although from slightly farther uphill than last time I tried it. I think walking it actually saved my legs a bit, because I was breezing by people later on, and let's fact it, I don't usually pass people on the bike!

After Old Stage, I felt good. I couldn't make up the time lost from walking, but I feel like I pushed as hard as I could. My quads and hamstrings agree. I shaved a few minutes off of the last time I did the course!
What would you do differently?:

Hmmm...let's start with actually training on the race course more than two weeks ahead of time and learning to ride hills. I'm a newbie cyclist and I've been focusing on adding distance this season, so I basically have not yet learned how to deal with hills.
Transition 2
  • 02m 16s
Comments:

I was a bit shaky and couldn't get my bike into the rack before the third try - I kept missing the rear-loading tire slots. I wasted a few seconds deciding whether or not to take my water bottle (i.e. sipping from it to see if it was too hot, which it was).
What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing transitions and stay focused when there.
Run
  • 1h 15m 19s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 12m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

OMG - I wanted to die. This was an embarrassing run/walk debacle for me due to the heat. I felt like I still had energy but just couldn't bear the heat. As I write this at 3:00 on race day it is currently 99 in Boulder. It had to have been mid 90s around 10-11 when I was running this morning.

But I'm not excusing myself here. I should have been able to come up with something close to 60-65 minutes even when I'm tired and hot. I left 10-15 minutes on the table because I wimped out. As with biking hills, I avoid running in the heat because I hate it. But I need to get ok with it if I want to keep doing tris and other summer races.
What would you do differently?:

HTFU
Post race
Warm down:

A little bit of stretching; got some fruit, acai juice, water, and then beer (gotta love my post-race nutrition)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of biking preparedness; caving to the heat

Event comments:

The 5430 folks put on a great race. This course was a bit too challenging for me (relative newbie BOPer), but I look forward to the opportunity to improve upon my performance next season!

Good job with the race.  It was hot spectating so I am sure it was miserable actually racing.  Keep it up and you will see improvments.

It's hard when you put a Minnesota girl in the heat . . .
I think you did great. Way to hang in there. It just makes the next one easier.

Nice job in really tough conditions.

The temp gauge in my car said 96 degrees when I left the res.  I was really hot and all I was doing was spectating (my wife did the race).  Actually, I spent most of the time standing knee deep in the cool water of the res whimpering thinking about how hot I am going to be in 3 weeks when I go back out there for the 5430 HIM.

It's that damn Scandinavian heritage - I just don't have heat tolerance in my blood. Maybe I need to try those crazy May triathlons where the water is still frigid, but the air temps are manageable...

Great job!  You finished - with a course like that and in that heat, that's quite a feat in itself!  The swim will get better with more experience.  Getting the endurance down is the hard part - once you get the distance, speed will come eventually.  "More time in the pool" and "swim coaching"?  YES.  Seriously, give it some time and be patient and you'll nail it.  You had one up on me as far as the bike - at least you DID practice it beforehand!  And don't be so hard on yourself regarding the run.  In that kind of heat, there's no such thing as wimping out.  Really.  If you're not feeling it, it's far smarter to take it easy.

You didn't cave to the heat.  You hung in there and finished!  Nice job!
