This past weekend I raced in the NJ State Tri (Sprint). This was my 4th sprint for the season and I finished 2 minutes under my goal of 1:30. I took off on Mon just for a recovery day, Tues. I went for an A.R.T. session and the rest of the week I went on 2 short rides. I normally train 5 to 6 days per week but this week I have been slacking off and just don’t have it in me to get going. I think part of the problem is that I don’t have any race scheduled right now.

My question is, do you find that you slack off a little after a good race? And are you less motivated to train when you dont have any races coming up. I know next week I will get my head out of my A _ _ and hit it hard, but I was just wondering if I am not alone.

I am very much in the same boat. If I don't have an event on the calendar, I have a hard time training. I aslo experienced a major drag after my first marathon in January (not because I did well, rather I was just tired of training). It was all I could do to do "just enough" training to get through a sprint I had schedule in March. Now, I'm back to full-time training (for me atleast) and attacking an olympic tri for the first time. If I don't have a goal, I have no desire to get back to the training.

The same thing happens to me but eventually it passes and you get back into a rythmn. It's probably you're body just telling ya it's a little burnt out and needs a break. Sometimes my lack of motivation can last over a week and I really have to force myself to get back out there. Once I do...I'm back in the game. So you're definitely not alone!

I am certainly feeling that way right now.  I just finished my first HIM back at the end of July and since then I just haven't been in the same training mind frame.  I have been looking for a new event thinking that may snap me out of it, but I am not sure.  Hang in there... you aren't alone.

I'm feeling the same way. I am really ready to race, but haven't had any events since May! I normally love to train, but lately it has been seeming like a chore. I got a race that I want to do in August, but I am not yet signed up (though I will be soon). Races definitely keep things intresting! Hang in there though. I still work out as much as I ever have, and the workouts still feels as great as they ever have (afterwards!). I know I would still keep training though, even if I never had another race. You just have to find other things to keep you motivated (or sign up for another race!).

I'm in that club too.  I'm always working out, but only training when  a race is on the horizon.

change it up and grab a tennis racquet or something.

Like above, if I don't have a race signed up for I drop off the radar.  May not really hurt to take a month off.

Personally I have found amusement with putting on some fat, telling everyone I'm intentinally doing it, then taking it off later.  More fun to lose weight than just to maintain.

Why not move to Olys?  Not any more training, just a bit more focused.  You might like them better.

I think everybody goes through it. The key for me, at least, is to back off the intensity but DON'T GET OFF THE SCHEDULE of working out. Then it's really hard to get back at it.

Go for shorter/easier run or rides. Change things up and go for a trail run. Just enjoy the work out instead of pushing yourself so much. But don't get out of the habit of working out.

I trained for a century ride last summer, and after the ride I was burned out from biking or anything physical in general. So over the next three weeks following the ride my number of workouts was decreasing steadily. Then one saturday I was feeling bored and lazy so I went out for a fairly hilly ride and literally tore the roads up. I couldn't believe how I was flying up these hills!

I was so confused that my body was able to put out such a speedy effort even though I felt like I was doing nothing for the previous three weeks.

Then it hit me: I was actually doing a long (VERY unplanned) taper and my body had finally regenerated to the point that I came back stronger.

So I'd say get another race on the docket, give your brain a mental rest for a week or two, and get back out there! Good luck!
