In the article Your First Ironman: A How-To Guide - specifically the Run - Special Needs bag, it says to pack some pain killers (but not NSAIDS).  Are NSAIDS risky to take during the race, if so why?

What kind of pain killers CAN you take safely during the IM.  My problem is my low back gets pretty tight during the bike and would like to take something if needed for some relief.

(From what I understand) NSAIDS have been linked to hyponatremia. Because NSAIDS have an effect on the kidneys and therefore affect how much (or how little) your kidneys are producing. In a long endurance event like an IM where you are constantly hydrating, your kidneys need to be functioning normally.

There was a pretty good thread on this with related links in the general forum (see link below). Bottom line is that NSAID's can cause serious internal organ issues if taken frequently during endurance sports. Tylenol a better choice if you really need something, but even that shouldn't be overdone.
