Pre-race routine:

My usual 2 bowls of cereal & 2 cups of coffee. The drive to the race site was about 30 minutes. Arrived & registered. Pumped up my tires & made the usual 2 trips to the port-a-potty.
Event warmup:

Rode the second run course, 2 miles. It was good to see the route to the turn around. Beter idea what to expect.

  • 2 miles

Comments:

Oh I started out way too fast. 5:55 first mile. Of course several people pasted me on the return leg. I feel great starting out, but once my HR catches up, I am in the red zone. I expect that to happen, so it doesn't bother me too much. I do need to learn to pace myself.
What would you do differently?:

Try to start a little slower.
Transition 1
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

Seems like a long time just to take off my running shoes, grab my helmet & bike and run out. Transitions are not my strongest suit, but I did pass 5 people on the way out
What would you do differently?:

speed it up
Bike
  • 25m 46s
  • 9.3 miles
  • 21.66 mile/hr
Comments:

Good ride. HR steady a around 150. I almost crashed into a barrier just out of T1 as I was looking down fixing my shoes. That could have hurt!
What would you do differently?:

Look up the road when getting into my shoes.
Transition 2
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

At least I am consistent with my time
Run
  • 13m 59s
  • 2 miles

Comments:

I was expecting a 7:15 or more pace. Felt great off the bike, increased speed over the first 1/2 mile. Made the turn around at 7:01. On the way back, I saw a lot of people getting close. Did my best to keep the tempo going. Was passed at about 1/3 mile to go. He looked my age.... I hung onto him for about 100 meters, then he left me. Still he helped me keep my pace up. Finished the last mile @ 6:58 with a young kid right behind me at the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Can't think of anything
Post race
Warm down:

Walked a bit, drank some H2O. Jogged about 3/4 mile.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Limited brick workouts prior to the race. No speed work.

Event comments:

This race is a fun, short race. It is a good workout. Decided to race to judge my running. Still trying to FULLY recover from knee surgery. Obviously it doesn't affect my running too much, but I still have some pain & I have not been doing any speed work this year. I was very pleased with my times.

Course: Good course overall. No major hills. But it is an open course filled at times with recreational cyclists & runners. One turn was scary. I had to weave around 2 bikes coming toward me when I made the turn. Marshals were few on the course. No turnaround cone to miss though since it was a loop. I also just squeezed past abbout 20 geese that were walking across the road.
