Here's an article that I found today.  I saw a posting in another thread that mentioned swim drafting.  I think this is interesting (mainly because I'm a weak swimmer) but the pool design in Beijing is different:

"More sophisticated pool design has also helped to dissipate wave action that can slow a swimmer. The Olympic pool in Beijing is three meters deep, compared to two meters, or 6 feet, for many racing pools. The added depth is designed to lessen water resistance for swimmers by insulating them from turbulence that rebounds off the bottom of a shallower pool.

For major international competitions, like the Olympics, the pool is 10 lanes wide, instead of eight. The two empty outside lanes serve as buffers, keeping the waves from ricocheting, dispersing them instead to a gutter system that is flush with the surface of the water.

The plastic buoys that serve as lane dividers, or lane lines, are designed to direct water downward instead of outward. The nonskid starting blocks are meant to facilitate a propulsive takeoff, somewhat similar to track and field, which can shave valuable ticks off the clock."

So basically what you're saying is, "No, Bripod, two out of the three pools you swim in regularly are NOT 25 meters. They're 25 yards. BUT, since the one you're used to has the gutters that are level with the surface of the water, THAT is why you're about 5 seconds faster per 100yd in it than in the other two." *sigh*, I thought I was swimming in meters pools this whole time.

That makes me happy that my regular pool has gutters though! Great article, thanks for posting!

Yeah a legit competition pool (as in for the Olympics or World Championships) is amazing...that being said don't discount drafting even with all the wave minimizing features---just look at the 4x100 relay last night---Lesak did a great job of sitting on the lane line for the first 50 then moving to the middle of his lane---with these monster sprinters they have a HUGE wake (ever notice that kick?!?!) and you can ride it...then you move yourself away from the person that you just rode....good stuff!!

So WE all would be MUCH faster in one of those amazing poolsWink
