JBrashear - 2008-08-25 11:57 AM Assuming that a 305 is fully charged, does it last for a full IM? It wouldn't be used on the swim, just the bike & run, and this would be for someone that's looking to finish in 15-17 hour range.

I use a 305 but I don't do IM. From what I have seen, I would guess it won't last. However a bit of googling turned up a guy who modified a charging cradle for mobile use. If you don't mind the weight of a few batteries on the bike, you should be able to get off the bike with a fully charged 305. Or you could use something like this .... http://www.apc.com/products/family/index.cfm?id=314

I guess it depends on how badly you want the info.

I believe the 405 has a longer battery life.

I have a good friend "Chris M." who has done IMs all over the world... I asked him about it and he said "Yeah mate, and he still should have an hour left afterwards."

Uuuhhhh... does your friend take 16 hours to finish? Because I will.

Oh come on, you can do this:

Run your Ironman Naked

It's only kinky the first time you do it...

You can get a Timex watch set up for intervals that beep like 5'/2'. I borrowed Sue's (socks) watch for my IM...set it up for 5/1..but couldn't hear it beep much.

You can? How? I have a Timex Ironman.

You could bite the bullet (strange expression; I wonder if anyone got a cheek blowout doing that) and buy a Garmin Edge 305.  I have one because I got started in cycling before I lost my mind and got into the hell and highwater activities that make up the triumvirate.

So I can use the Edge on the bike, start it when I get to the bike at T1.  While I'm deciding on baby powder, foot dip, or roll-on deodorant for my tootsies, it can be satellite locking.  By the time I get on the bike, I hit start and that will lock in my end-of-T1 time and track the rest of the bike ride. I'll keep the Forerunner turned off until just after T2.

Since I will know what time the event started, I'll know from the Edge how long the swim+T1 took, which is good enough for me.  (Actually, remembering the date that I actually DID a triathlon is good enough!)  I'll also know the run time from the Forerunner.
