Subject: Half IM training
The problem i have with aiming for my goal of completing a half IM in October is that with a young family i have to prioritise when i train. I am lucky in that i can run in my lunch hour up to 10klm's and swin tuesday and thursday nights for around an hour. I bike on weekends which i am quite comfortable with for up to 2 hours so i have to look at ways i can increase my work load around the time i am given.

I really struggle to do training in the morning, I have and it takes me a while to get going but is it something you get used to? I have always excercised either during the day or after work so it is something i will have to try and consider.

Cheers

I used to go training 5.30-7.30 every morning (mon-sat) and swim for two hours, Yea you do get used to it but after 10 mins, u are glad that you decided to get up and do the workout. Good start to the day.

I have found a.m. workouts to be the solution to a lot of time issues. You have to discipline yourself to get to bed at a decent hour and do a little preplanning. However, once you get a routine, it becomes just that and pretty hard to break. You can do it.

My swimming is the problem for me i dont have a great technique so i tend to fight against the water which tires me out after 500m so i need to work on that if im to go any further. I also are looking at doing Noosa i dont know whether you have herd of it or not it's the second biggest Olympic tri in the world behind Chigago. It's up in queensland Oz around the same time as the half Im i want to, so i figure if i have to swim 1500m in noosa i can swim 1800m in a half IM?

Have you tried a masters swim program? It can help structure your workouts and can be a great way to get in the necessary swimming workouts. You will learn through drills and input from a coach, how to best balance your body in the h20. I have read about it, even saw it on dvd, but when you have a coach on the deck of the pool, pointing out details to you and giving you specific feedback, you can't go wrong.

Good luck to you!

It does just come down to priority. For longer races I think it is important to work on endurance twice a week. You need to schedule your two long days and then make sure you do them, let the other workouts slide if you have to.
The other thing that really helps is biking to work, the gym where ever. If you bike instead of driving all of the mileage adds up.
You should probably try to make the long ride on the weekend a little longer. Try to go at least the race distance on the bike once a week with just a little bit of a run after. It doesn't matter how far or fast run off the bike just do it to get used to the transitions and to see what you are in for.

Thank you very much for the great advise i like it when you get simple answers that are reachable and not complicated. You read so many training plans that are just not practical for the hours you need and there must be a better answer or every one competing at the endurance level would nearly need to train full time. I dint know where you would get a simple training plan for some like my self who works has a family but a pretty good base in all three disciplines?
