Is your run volume the same as it was before you started tris?

No, not at all. Way less in fact, but the running pace decrease and cessation of core work were concurrent.

I would opine that the slowing down is more related to the loss of run volume, and less to do with core exercises.

I've gotten faster since I stopped core work, but increased volume. 



Like I said, the slow down happened before I decreased my volume, but concurrent with the core. I have heard and read time and time again that core strength will increase your ability to run farther and faster.

1 - Relaxation

2 - Start slow with every run

3 - Run natural - don't listen to a bunch of people about the way you SHOULD run.  Yes, some people have faults but too many times people try to change their natural running style and end up with injuries

4 - Run often.  After the beginning stages of running when you can only do 2 - 3 days a week the best advice I have is to slowly increase the number of times a week you run.

5 - After all this - work on specific workouts - tempo, sprints, lsd, etc.
